I was prescribed the 8mg tablets. They're expensive and I'm not super keen on taking pills all the time so I just take half or one when I feel the need (half a pill for the past two days for example). I've got 2 questions, is it a problem to do this?
My second question is about the constipation. There's a recent thread about constipation but I just don't think Metamucil is gunna cut it. I took a movical sachet and it didn't really help. What do others do? Oh, I'm also on elevit.
Thanks in advance!

I assume you have been prescribed Zofran due to HG?

I take Zofran for HG - I take 4mg on a as needs basis but my GP prescribes 8mg and tells me to halve it to help reduce cost. If you have PHI check to see if you can recoup some of the cost.

Constipation coloxyl should do the trick make sure you take one WITHOUT senna.

If you have HG talk to your caregiver about Restavit and vitamin B6 for treatment, these are cheaper than Zofran. By taking these I have gone from needing Zofran twice a day to only on bad days which is about once a week.

Yes it is fine to take half. They are expensive but you may find you need the whole one. None of us liked taking them but its that or near death hg pregnancy. It cost me a fortune.

The constipation was horrific. Nothing at all worked for me. I had a few microlax enemas in hospital trips. Otherwise you don't even want to know lol.

Legend...
I was taking 1-2 8mg a day. I stopped for a little bit because of the constipation, but in the end decided that the pain from that was the lesser of two evils. I couldn't do anything without it, so just put up with the constipation and upped my intake of water and pear juice.

Prune juice..... ahhhhh.... Take a cup ie: 250 ml and wait half an hour. Near a toilet. If nothing: Take another cup. Two cups really should do it. Prunes themselves don't seem to work as well.....

Prune juice works by drawing water into the bowel, so drink lots of water as well !

Good luck ! Its AWFUL. We went through $4,500 k for my second pregnancy, with me only taking 1/2 a tablet a day when I really needed two......

I've heard that if you can get a hospital script ie: you fill it at the Hospital pharmacy, its much cheaper - talk to your Ob !!

Zofran is a lifesaver - the half a tablet a day is worth every cent in my opinion. And I'm sure it costs less than my husband spends on coffee, wine, magazines, records and other superfluous spending each week, so I'm not going to feel guilty about the money when I need it to function.
As for whether taking Zofran is safe...

A close friend took 4 x 8mg wafers per day from six weeks preg till she delivered at seven months. Her twins are seven now and absolutely thriving - if the Zofran and 2 months prem birth had any negative impact on them I swear, you'd never know.
Also, a close friend is an obstetrician and is always lovely about answering my questions. When I told him my concerns about taking Zofran he laughed and said it's fine, nothing to worry about. I don't know why this reassured me more than my doctor telling me it was safe, but I know my friend would have discussed it if there were risks (he took very seriously my concerns about 12 week testing, for example). He said they give Zofran to kids who come into emergency with gastro.
By the way, I found a variation in price depending on Zofran or generic and even which chemist I bought it at. Zofran 10 x 8mg tablets cost me $85ish at one chemist, but another chemist sold me a generic (Onsetron?) 10 x 8mg wafers for only $65. When I bought the next lot at the same chemist but from a different pharmacist I was charged $75ish but I asked why the price had gone up from $65 and the pharmacist said he'd give them to me for $65 again. May be worth asking around your local chemists to see if they stock the generic and can lower the price a bit...

Thanks so much for your replies. I'll try the prune juice, the prunes didn't work but hopefully the juice does.

You could try 100% cranberry juice from healthfood shops. Sour as. But many have success.

It might not be an option for you (and you may not want to do it if it is) but I got a prescription for ondansetron made up at a compounding pharmacy and it was significantly cheaper than the wafers.

Yes the constipation sucks but it's nothing compared to feeling so sick light headed and not being able to keep anything down. Saying that though I didn't get really bad constipation.

I have always found kiwi fruit works well. After I had ds2 I suffered got told to try kiwi fruit so ate two of them each day and it worked very well.
