Hi all,

I posted about a week ago about DS (6 months) who we have recently started on solids, and needing a bit more advice please?

So, we've been offering solids for about 10 days now and hes just not interested (most of the time). At first he would open his mouth for the spoon (and usually take a tiny bit) but now he just closes his mouth tightly & turns his head away. I've tried homemade rice cereal, puree pears & pumpkin-not interested. However, when my mum fed him a few days ago he took the most he has ever taken of some pears/cereal (maybe had 1-2 tablespoons total). He wasn't waiting eagerly for the next mouthful or anything, but he did eat some. He will also take a (tiny) bit when DH feeds him (like, 1 or 2 teeny spoonfuls).

A) has anyone else had this where baby will take solids from someone other than mum (I'm BFing him by the way)?

B) should I give it a rest for a while (like 2 weeks) because he seems to be getting frustrated with me trying to feed him & I don't want to put him off!

My gut feeling is stop for a while. Then maybe try a finger food approach.

Any advice or similar experiences welcome. Thanks!

I don't think it's that unusual for babies to behave differently for fathers/grandmothers/etc than they do for their mothers in relation to food, bottles, milk and everything else actually!

My DD1 never ate anything from a spoon. We did finger foods only purely by necessity, but it worked great. Check out the baby-led weaning threads for more info on that, there's no need to wait until he's older. Try steamed broccoli, sticks of cucumber, avocado on a cruskit, that kind of thing. He'll soon let you know if he prefers that method of delivery!

Step 3: Let go of all the stress about getting your baby to eat, and get on with your own meal!

Your baby can feed himself! He knows how much he needs, you just need to leave him to it!

In all seriousness, some babies really take to being spoon fed. Some babies take to solids earlier. For babies who don't want to open their mouths and/or aren't quite ready, BLW is a really stress free alternative - as long as you understand it (ie by doing your research)!
