Hi, We are planning on a family holiday overseas, both Dh and I have current passports, but our children dont, i was wondering are they added onto my [passport or do they each have their own or not? Their ages are 7, 5 and 3 years.

Back in the day, children under 5 were on the mothers passport, now every person gets their own. Childrens passports only last 5 years though.

I just recently had to get my daughter a new one as it didn't have 6 months validity within our travel dates, I was suprised it only took a week to arrive

Oh ok thanks, i just thought that theyre added to my passport, but they have to have their own individual passports then? I'll have to see about that before we plan to travel.

It's not a big deal, and normal turnaround is 2 weeks. I put in 3 renewals and a new application and they all arrived on the same day.

Yes, definitely have to have their own and most countries require 3-6 months validity from the departure date. The best thing to do is check out the smart traveller website and check what the requirements are.

Also, even though the turn around may only be 1-3 weeks, I wouldn't leave it any less than 2 months. My older 5 children are onto their 2nd passports and you would not believe the hiccups we've had over the years with getting the forms submitted. Stupid things you wouldn't even think of, photo rejections, on some pages you can not have the slightest error. Once we had to resubmit because the person signing wrote 1 number wrong in the post code. Once we discovered that the person signing's electoral role form hadn't been processed and so we had to redo the whole thing with a new person. Even getting the photo done can sometimes be difficult if children don't want to cooperate and may take more than one try. It took us 3 goes to get my DS passport a few months ago. I was starting to worry it'd never happen lol.

Be very precise when filling in the forms. My DS's had to be redone because my friend said she had known him 5 years 2 months (she has known him sall his life) they worked out he ws only 5yers 27 days old. So we had to change it to 5 years 1month

With the photos, get them done at the post office. They re-do them until they are right.
