Our current vacuum is about 20 years old, and while its fine for this rental, I'd like a great vacuum for our new house.
I'd ideally like a vacuum that can handle polished hardwood floors, a reasonable amount of carpet, tiles and carpeted stairs. All without being too heavy or painful.
Does such a wondrous appliance exist? I'm happy to spend a decent amount of money to get a good quality, versatile vac.
ETA: also would love recommendations for good quality steam mops!

Our Dyson is amazing. Expensive, but amazing - and everything you described! You can also buy separate attachments for it specialised for different surfaces, we have a couple and they are just great. DF even told me the other day that he now enjoys vacuuming! (He won't live that one down.)

I blew our dyson up, just out of warranty. Not happy!

We just bought a dyson for our new house, omg, I just looooove my dyson, we got the upright on, I think it's called the animal, coz it had rotating thingys in the head of the vacuum that pick up any animal hair, it's amaaaazing, and my hubby also sez he now enjoys vacuuming lol

Yep, Dyson here as well... I have an older one (DC05) - have had it for about 8 or 9 years and there is still nothing wrong with it. I want to get a new one purely becuase the new one has a clever little trick where is switches itself from carpet tool to hard floor tool by itself... this one.

For the hard floors I love my hoover steam mop. I have 98% hard floors, either tile or hard wood. I love that I can refill the water and keep gonig, I also love the ease of changing the pad, and I clean the pad after use with elbow grease and laundry soap.

For the carpet area's I use the hoover upright, which has the 'dustbuster' attachment builtin. Not the best suction I have ever had, but does the job on the small area I need.

Another vote for the Dysons. Mine is about 5 years old now and I still enjoy vacuuming with it!

I was feeling too cheap, I mean cleverly economical, and couldn't justify the Dyson because I was setting up a whole new house at the time. I've been really happy with my Vax Zen pet hair vacuum. I have tiles and floorboards and a few rugs. The carpet attachment is great.

I may take to vacuuming the pug rather than try and catch all the hair he drops though...

Never get a Dyson. We had too many problems with ours, it was repaired and replaced too many times. We eventually just threw it out and lost a lot of money by doing that.

If money was no object I'd get a robotic vacuum for the flat areas and Miele for the stairs.
