If a cat doesn't like you, then what's wrong with you?
So it's 2am here in WA and DH just came in and told me he has found a baby rabbit.

He heard screaming so went outside to check and the neighbour's cat had something in its mouth. DH managed to retrieve it and it is a baby rabbit. It's tiny, about the size of an avocado. It has no blood on it so I'm assuming DH got to it before the cat was able to do any serious damage, it's ear looks a bit floppy though sad.gif

It's a public holiday today so I'm not sure if there are any vets open.

It is in the spare room, in a box (safely away from our 6 cats). We have given it some spinach and fruit.

How do we care for it in the mean time? Will the vet put it down because it's a pest? Rabbits are allowed as pets in WA but we don't want it to be put down automatically? I hope it doesn't climb out of the box! Maybe we should have put it in a cat cage.

If it's a wild rabbit, it won't survive unless you let it go. It will die of shock. My kids have caught baby rabbits and unfortunately they died sad.gif even though they weren't injured.
The best thing to do is honestly to let it go.

sad.gif so sad.

I'll see if it has survived the morning. I have contacted one of the rabbit rescuer organizations here in WA to seek further advice. Poor little thing.

Look up emergency vets in your area - Murdoch Uni has one but there are others around. They'll be open today.

Otherwise, maybe look up info on hand rearing baby rabbits to see what you can feed the little one. It will need to be checked over by a vet soon to make sure it doesn't have any diseases.

If you plan to keep it as a domestic pet, desexed, then I don't see it being an issue, but I'm not an expert there.

keep it in a covered box with some water and some vegetables and surrender it to any vet at the earliest chance. it is likely they will euthanise it because it is a pest species, but it will be treated humanely in any case.

There's also the 24 hour Balcatta vet, they will be able to help.
