DS 5.5 month started solids a week ago. To start, we tried rice cereal with BM but no likey - tried again following day but no good, so two days later tried pear & rice cereal mixed with BM with much more success - he had about 3 small teaspoons. Fast forward to today and he's gobbling it down ! He whined when I stopped at about 4 teaspoons yesterday, so I offered more and he took it. Same again today. Should I just give me however much he'll take ? Ended up about a tablespoon and a half today.

I also upped the rice cereal a bit so he doesn't get too used to the sweetness of the pear and want to start avocado or sweet potato in the next week or so.

Any input appreciated !

Sounds perfectly fine. MCHN told me to offer until they refused it. You'll know when he doesn't want anymore!

I was told to offer solids about an hour after a milk feed so that they're still getting enough nutrition from milk - I'm assuming that milk is more calorie dense than solids, maybe someone can confirm?

One of the bubs in mothers group got v.v. constipated (ended up at the RCH) so maybe wait and see that bubs doesn't get too blocked up before increasing quantities. She now gets a bit of prune with her rice cereal and they moved onto blw pretty soon.

Go slow on the rice cereal. It is very constipating for some babies. It was an issue with both my bubs and I ended up hardly even using it with DS and just going with straight fruit and veges, keeping them fairly watery.

I didnt get hung up on sweetness or things like that. Pear is a great 1st food, very gentle on their stomachs.

Thanks all
Yes, bfing about 45-60 mins before. He did go three days without pooping (which he's also done pre solids) but then went straight after feeding - a pool in his high chair no less eww
