I really want to get back into shape this year but we're on a budget atm so I can't really afford to join a gym right now. (Unless anyone can recommend one that's not too pricey!)

I used to run before having DS 3 years ago but I hate running on my own and am finding it really hard to stay motivated
I'm also finding it very lonely here as we moved to Canberra in August and I haven't really made any friends yet so I really need to get out of the house and do something for myself and meet some new people.

So I'd love it if anyone could recommend a running group or any other cheapish fitness ideas, preferably northside.

Thanks original.gif

hi there and welcome to canberra!

It can be a lonely place to get started in, could you join a sports team? Social Basketball in belconnen isn't overly expensive.

I've been having the same problems though, no money and I need a buddy to get motivated too.

I found a few walking groups on meetup.com, but that was a bit far away.

Hope it works out for you, and if you want someone to walk with Pm me! (Although I'm not fit at all)

There are lots of great walking tracks around Canberra - I walk up Mt Ainslie a few times a week (great fitness!) and I see lots of people running up there.

This is a map of all the walking/bike paths around the town.

The YMCA of Canberra has a runners club and I know they will be starting a group focusing on the women's fun run coming up in march.

I haven't been to Canberra for a few years but used to be part of a group called "Females in Training", known as FIT, which ran group training sessions for the triathlon disciplines and also did a more social run on Saturday morning (from memory about 6 or 7 k). Google them and the website has their details. There also used to be a womens and girls funrun once a month at Mt Stromlo that I think is still going.

The number of different fitness activities is something I miss about Canberra!

Spikey I'm busy that day or I would have come along, maybe next time original.gif

Thanks apageintime, lovely of you to offer. Once I've found a group maybe you can join too so then we'll both "know" someone!

We have a an eb facebook running group and one of our girls is from Canberra (but I can't remember her name on EB anymore ph34r.gif . WIll give her a nudge on the f/b group. Also a highly recommend you check out parkrun as you will meet a heap of runners at all levels here. Parkrun is a free weekly timed 5k. They are good fun and great way to push you a little harder from whatever level you are at.

Snap Fitness in lanyon is only $27.50 per fortnight for unlimited use and you don't have to be on a contract so you can cancel at any time. I think it is $50 deposit for the entry card (as it is a 24hour gym) and they have free joining all the time but mind you I think their joining fee was $20?
I think it is very reasonably priced but not sure where you live
