Just been reading the thread about ttc tricks and it got me thinking about pregnancy multi vitamins.

What would you ladies consider the best multi vitamin to be pre pregnancy and then through out your pregnancy? I have always used Elevit with Iodine but a couple of pp on the previous thread were talking about Blackmores Conceive Well Gold.

TIA

My Ob believes that both Blackmores Pregnancy & Breastfeeding and Elevit's version are equally good and provide the right amount of folate for first trimester, but then she switches her patients to Usana's Multivitamin and Multi-Mineral capsules because they provide a wider variety of vitamins and minerals, plus their Omega supplement too, for the rest of the pregnancy.

I think it really comes down to how much money you wish to spend on supplements and how healthy your diet is. My GP thinks a folate supplement is enough if you have a well-balanced diet.

It really depends on your needs. I like that BM has omega fatty acids but elevit has considerably higher iron levels which may or may not be a good thing depending on your needs. In general multis should be viewed as a bonus and not a substitute for good nutrition they rarely have the cofactors in correct amounts that your body needs to utilise each vitamin/mineral and conversely they often work against each other eg. calcium will inhibit the absorbtion of iron.

Thanks namie, I have never heard of Usana's Multivitamin and Multi-Mineral, I will look into it.

Folate is the main thing. Everything else is just ... Gravy, and more for you than the baby.

I am not a huge meat eater so maybe Elevit. Too many options is not a good thing for me wink.gif

I bought some Swisse Pregnancy Plus Ultravite the other day (was on special - $20 for 3 months worth)

Compared with Blackmores Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Gold:

Iron: Swisse - 5mg, BM - 10mg
Folic Acid: Swisse - 500 micrograms, BM - 500 micrograms
Iodine: Swisse - 250 micrograms, BM - 150 micrograms

I've doubled the BM as you are supposed to take 2 per day.

Thanks PatG for the comparisons original.gif . Swisse is much cheaper than Elevit and even though it was on special I am certain that at full price it would be not as expensive as Elevit.

Namie, I think we have the same obstetrician. I really like her. I've never taken so many huge vitamins in my life though!
