Caustic smelling urine, in 18mo DS

As above DS is 18mo and recently I have noticed a very caustic smell when I take the lid off the nappy bucket (we use MCNs). I just thought they needed a strip wash. This morning DS had no nappy on and did a wee on DD's floor. I placed a terry flat nappy down and put her side table on top to soak it up. When I went back to get the nappy I noticed the caustic smell in the cloth nappy. He no longer wears these they are just used for spill rags etc and are washed normally in different detergent than the MCNs. So no I know it is his urine not the nappies, should I be concerned? He has a very healthy diet with very little processed food and always has his water bottle cuddled in his arm sucking from it. We have a doctor's appt Tuesday for his 18mo vaccination but thought I would ask here first.

It may be worth asking the GP about testing a sample of his urine for a possible urinary tract infection. DD (7 months) has had two, and both times the only sign has been foul smelling urine - almost a chemical like smell. She has not seemed sick on either occasion but urine testing has confirmed a UTI. Other symptoms to look for include fussiness, vomiting, fever, pain on passing urine or tummy pain, or weeing more often. But from your post it sounds like he is generally well. Otherwise it could be that he has eaten something out of the ordinary, or that he has been a little dry (not sure if the weather is hot where you are) and the urine is more concentrated than usual. I hope it's nothing!

I would say it's either a UTI or your Bub isn't drinking enough to dilute the urine. Mine also get the strong ammonia smell when teething. Definitely see your GP if you are worried.

That's it - ammonia. I couldn't name it. He is otherwise well but I think he has some teeth coming on the bottom. He has also started wetting through his MCN at night and we've had to use disposables which he hasn't done since he was a little bub. I think I will try to catch a sample and take it with me on the day - I like to be prepared! Thanks for your suggestions, am not feeling so silly now!
