So, hubby and I were given a very frank talk back in November when I visited a new gyno ref. pap smears and whatnot and it was in the vain of 'You need to get serious about baby making now...'

We spent the holiday season really thinking about it and we've decided that we want to start 'planning to plan' essentially. We know it's not going to be an easy journey and we want to make sure we start out on the right foot.

I'm 25, and suffer from PCOS and Endometriosis, I've had two laparoscopies so far. I'm also insulin resistant and obese weighing in at 117kg at 5'8" - I'm on 3,000mg of Metformin a day and also take 40mg of Nexium a day to deal with reflux.

Hubby and I haven't used contraception in over 2years, we weren't doing it to actively try for a baby, but to be honest, we just really didn't mind. If we fell pregnant we'd have been happily surprised, but I was told when I was around 15 (after my first laparoscopy) that I would struggle to have kids so I've never considered it much of an option. We're aware that IVF may have to be considered down the line, so I'm looking at health insurance currently as well.

I think that before we actually TTC my weight is going to be the biggest issue which needs tackling. I'm working on it, and I'm finding the right mix for me diet wise seems to be low-carb, and I've managed to lose 2kg since new years.

I've got an appointment with my GP booked for next week, and I'm wondering whether there is anything specific I should be asking for/about.

I think in an ideal world, it would be wonderful if I could shed around 20kg by the end of the year (like August/September) to try and give us a boost. We've bought Elevit with Iodine which the gyno suggested.

Just wondering if anyone has some handy tips/ideas/suggestions (or has gone through this already?) so I can go into my doctors appointment feeling a little bit prepared.

It's all a bit daunting at this stage and neither of us know what to expect and we have no friends or family who've ever had to go through this.

So anything is appreciated...

If you have a sensible GP they should have in mind a bunch of things to chat to you about . . but i think

Its good to get a general check up - your blood pressure, pulse, etc just to see how your general health is

I would recommend checking all your vaccinations are up to date/ get serology done to test you are immune - esp for things like measles, mumps rubella as you cant have this once you are pregnant. Its also worth check serology for things like Hep B if you've been vaccinated.

It makes a real difference to your ability to conceive if you can lose weight - I lost 10kg before falling pregnant with DS and even though i was still overweight - i dont think i was able to conceive until i did because i was just too heavy. It might be worth chatting with you GP about your plans for this.

It sounds as though you've recently had a pap smear - its worth getting that done.

If you need any dental work that might need an xray its probably worth doing that before TTC as well (I got root canal out of the way before TTC because i figured it would be the last time i would have any money and i didnt want to be having xrays when pregnant!)

I started off with Elivit - just bear in mind that it can get expensive if you take a while to conceive!!
