Emmaline has had problems with feeding/ sleeping since birth.. Even though the hospital I gave birth to her in was wonderful, they were not very supportive when I mentioned bubs being unsettled.. They put it down to being newborn..
At 4 weeks she was diagnosed with reflux and put on medication.. She has spent 3 hours screaming yesterday, and my mum instincts told me that something was not right..
At the hospital in emergency late yesterday afternnon, she fed for 3 minutes and then brought the feed plus the one before.. Over the next few hours she did the same thing, fussing and feeding for 3-5 mins then bringing the feed up..
They admitted her and have increased the Losec to 5 mls from 2.5 and that has helped the pain cry over night.. We are hopefully going home tomorrow if she keeps feeds down and feeds for longer.. We are doing nappy weighs today/ overnight...
She is sleeping which is great because her sleep is all over the place..
Emmaline doesn't have a routine because everything is on demand, and she loves to be held and that comfort of being close to me, so I find it hard to get anything done.. The hospital's aim in the next 24 hours, is to monitor Emmaline and make sure she is wetting enough nappies.. To get a feeding routine started so that when we go home, I am not continually feeding her 4 times in 2 hours...

They can see I am exhausted and I just got over a bad dose of conjunctivitis because of the lack of sleep... The hospital are sending the social worker to see me latter as well.. I have emotionally and physically hit the wall after 5 weeks of tryjng to keep myself together and be strong for my family, and i cried heaps in Emergency this morning..Hopefully things will improve now

Could you carry Emmeline around in a sling, which is closely wrapped to your body. Plenty of skin to skin to soothe your little newborn and feeding every 2-3 hours in 24hours. This is what newborns need. I presume you are breastfeeding.

I had DS#3 in hospital for a week when he was 4 weeks old, it was terrible, seeing the drip in his little arm. He had contracted bacterial meningitis , was lucky, he was out after a week. By watching them do the lumber puncture is as fresh as ever in my mind.

I hope they get to the bottom of it so you and baby can be back at home soon.

OP already said she is sometimes feeding up to 4 times in 2 hours, and that her baby loves to be carried a lot. I dont think baby Emmelines troubles are due to lack of feeding or cuddles.
My new one was very very hard work from weeks 3-7 and i was shattered. He didnt have reflux and wasnt in pain, and it was still tough. You must have been having a terrible time OP, and i hope things improve for you all soon.

OP you sound as though you and your DD have been havinG a really tough time.

I hope that things continue to improve once you guys go home, I am a huge advocate of letting off steam, I had a very stressful day last week and I erupted like a volcano, omg did I feel lighter on my feet after that!!

Please take care of yourself and remember having a newborn is hard enough, let alone having a sick one and you need to take care of yourself as well as your DD. xo

my 5 week old is the same. I could have almost written the same post. It's so hard, especially with a 2 year old and a 4 year old too. My 5 week old ds is on 10mg of losec at the moment and what i have found that helps is adding infacol to his feeds... it helps him burp more often as well... I also find what helps is having him sleep in his swing.. he's not flat on his back and i have found this helps alot. good luck.

hugs, reflux is awful for poor little bubs. DD was on Losec until she was about 18months, she'd turn into a screaming monster when we tried to stop it.

Once Emmeline's pain is reduced (it will take a few days for the burns from the acid to start to heal) hopefully she will settle into a better routine for you. She was probably feeding so often to try to soothe the pain, but the frequent feeding can cause more frequent reflux and the cycle continues.

With DD we modified the routine to sleep, feed, play, feed, sleep etc. That break in the middle seemed to make a big difference to her vomiting. She was still a really chucky baby, but at least she became a happy chucker!

Does your daughter possible have a urinary tract infection or pyloric stenosis (sp.?)?. Only ask as DD sounds exactly the same as your daughter and she was diagnosed with a bad urinary tract infection that she had from birth, but which was only picked up at 6 weeks. They thought she had pyloric stenosis too which is very serious, but she thankfully did not. Interesting this is, the symptoms for UTI in infants is nothing similar to adults and very similar to reflux, which DD also had. Just a thought. Best wishes!
