DD recently moved to a bed (side off cot) and overall its not been too bad a transition (can take an hour to get to sleep but there is no crying....)

Issue is she is waking at 4:30am (or earlier) every morning and won't go to sleep. I try and keep her in bed (or at least in her room) until first light and have a Gro Clock on the way.

Any ideas on what to try? She isn't getting enough sleep and is turning into a little grump (especially in the afternoons) as a result. She generally doesn't/won't take extra naps or longer naps in the day to compensate

4 am is the coldest part of the night. When my DD wakes up at at that time it's usually because the temperature has dropped and she's woken from cold.

Firstly make sure she is warm. Even maybe have a heater on timer to come on at 4am on low.

Secondly dont get up. No action, no reason for her to get up. She will get pretty bored in a dark house at 5am with no TV and noone to play with. She'll figure it out.

OP, no advice but sympathy...my DD goes through periods of early waking too and also won't compensate with longer naps. she's going through one now (4:55 am start this morning) and i hate it. in our case it's behavioural. she definitely wasnt cold this morning or thirsty (I tried). she just seems to go through these patches of wanting to sleep less than usual. do you think a gro clock will work at this age? my DD is 22 months and i didnt think she would get the idea or comply, but she is super stubborn.

Hi aphraell - can't believe she is in a big bed already! Where does the time go???

But to the point...does she wander about, want you etc? Is it possible to put a child safety gate on her bedroom so she can putter about in her room safely?

I know you will probably still be woken up, but I find I can still relax if I can stay in bed and not have to do anything while I know the kids are safe!

Hi mama bug Yes, she has grown up waaay to fast. Was hoping to keep her in the cot till about 3 years but she had other ideas. Without the grobag she is out in about 10 seconds and even with a grobag I caught her half way out


She gets up and comes straight into our room so no ignoring her!

We've had these patches of early waking before but this one is really knocking me around for some reason....We had a 3 am start to the day and still only 1hr 20min nap all day. At least there was no problem going to bed tonight

My DD's little girl has just been returned to her cot for this very reason
Frequent night waking and walking out of the room every time she woke with a 5am rise for the day.
She was having her normal sleep cycles but when she woke and knew she could get out she did instead of rolling over and going back to sleep.
First night back in her cot she went to bed at 8pm, fussed for 10 minutes and didn't get up until 7am and she has done that ever since.

Hi, my DD is two days younger than yours :-)


she was moved to side off cot as well about two weeks ago. We've initially had problems getting her to sleep but that's over now luckily. No problems in the morning so I can't really help you but I'd suggest a gate in her doorway so she can't get out. Also as someone already said she might be cold.. Dd woke at this time the other morning coz she was cold! Put a blanket on her bed so she can pull it over herself?
