I have narrowed down my choice of baby carrier to the ergo original in the khaki colour or the sports in black.

I'm torn because I really like the idea of the sports being lighter and more breathable but the original has the pocket where I could store keys etc.

I know this has been discussed before but hoping someone can help me decide. For those with the original do you find it too hot?!

Baby is due in March and we live in SA, we have hot summers but at other times of the year the weather is quite moderate...

Baby wearing is hot. You have a person pressed up against you, so on a hot day you will both be sweaty, regardless of the carrier. On a cold day, you will both be snuggly.

I have the original (in khaki) and it's fine. I do use the pocket quite a bit, but not for keys, as the stick into the baby! I put them in my pocket and let them stick into me instead.

Baby wearing in general is hot.

I have the original. It's great. The pocket is handy, but not for that much - as Lokum said, keys stick into baby, I feel uncomfortable putting my mobile phone in there (I know they say radiation isn't an issue when the phone isn't on a call...).

I would actually get the sports if I had my time again. I just use a small bag with a long over-the-shoulder strap.

I keep my visa debit card or cash and my car key on its own in the pocket with my phone. So I don't have to carry a bag as well for quick trips places ad just keep the nappy bag n the car for 'just in case'

If I'm doing a longer outing I still bring the nappy bag or a handbag and put my keys and such in there. I do think the pocket is handy though.

I find the original Ergo is just fine up until about 30 degrees, then perhaps a little sweaty but if we both dress light it's fine. I don't find the pocket on the Ergo useful at all, but that's because I only use it for back carries (from six months onwards). Prior to six months I tend to use wraps or the Beco Gemini, Ergo really isn't great for small babies IMO, that infant insert is dreadful.

Also, the Ergo Organic is so soft! If I had my time over I'd chose that one instead.

I have to agree I am using a Hugabub (or similar) now for my 9 week old. Using it so much I have 2 - one for in the wash. He's a big fella (90th centile for length, 70th for weight) and I still won't put him in the Ergo for a while. I have the old traditional infant insert though. I've tried using the Heart2Heart infant insert, but bizarrely, DS seems to big for it - h pushes off with his little feet and then his neck is not supported.

I will use the Ergo again from around 4 months. It's still excellent value as I used it for DS1 until he was 2 years old and I was around 13 weeks pregnant.
