We are on the hunt for some decent white timber bunks, made from solid timber (no MDF!) and which can be separated into 2 singles. Have been scouring websites and visited a few furniture shops in person but haven't been that thrilled with what we've seen.

The bunks are either very chunky and heavy looking (federation style) or else slim-line but cheaply made (mixture of hardwood and MDF).

The boys' room is not big enough for two single beds so bunks are really our best option but don't want some big boxy piece of furniture that takes up all the space - however we want something structurally sound of course.

Has anyone purchased bunks recently that they can recommend?

Have you checked Bunkers out? Myabe a bit chunky but as sturdy as a bunk bed can ever be. I have two of their bunk beds myself and absolutely love them and so do my boys.

Can you post a picture of what you consider to be "too chunky/Federation style" so we have an idea of what not to suggest????

We've just got the Alaska bunk from Forty Winks, not sure if they're solid timber but they were the nicest bunks we could find without spending a fortune.

asanil - I had looked at bunkers and they do look well made but didn't really see a style I liked. I realise you can choose the finish you want so they might look different painted. Ah I have just noticed on their website that they have a showroom in Auburn. Might be worth popping in to have a look, I find they always look different close up.

Mamabug - yes this is what I consider a federation style bed. It is actually really nice and looks well made too but when we looked at one instore (it's also known as a Fraser bunk) it seemed too chunky for the small room it's going in. However, because it looks solid and well made it is still a possibility. The other downside for us is you can't reverse the ladder, which we would prefer.

babycat - Yes I know what you mean about not wanting to spend a fortune - especially as you have to buy 2 x new mattresses, bedlinen, doonas etc. This also looks like a nice bunk but is a mixture of hardwood and MDF, though the MDF may be just in the panels at the ends. Would be worth checking out, though I do prefer open slats at the bed ends, again because of the size of the room I thought it might seem too closed in. The room is rectangular so you would see the bunk end on, rather than side on if that makes sense. Hmm...I sound very picky don't I!

This is more the style I am after, but better made and solid timber - not a mix of materials. (Probably should have posted this in the OP)

We just bought the Fraser (hardwood) bunk from Sleeping Giant. It is really solid, although it is very much a federation style. The two main reasons we got this bed was the amount of room (height) in the bottom bunk, so it doesn't feel claustrophobic and I don't hit my head if i try to sit on the bed, and the fact it was a solid hardwood bed. Very happy so far!

We have bought bunkers bunks and must admit I love the build of them. I loved the fact that at the shop DS could get up on to them, and we could get a feel for how well they were made. So many shops wont let people hop on the bunks.

P8 of the bunkers brochure seems similar to the sussex or p10

Well we went in to the Bunkers showroom today to have a look and we loved the bunks! The photos on the website really don't do them justice. Simple design and very well made - I like that they're made to order and we can put the ladder wherever we like. And you can choose the finish too. We actually ordered one on the spot!

Thanks for all the recommendations guys, especially about the Bunkers ones because it made me go back for a second look.
