My ds had just got braces. He has awfully big ulcers from them, and we have been given a product callled Orthosil to use. It isn't wax, it silicone. And bloody hard to get in place!


What I am wondering is if it is safe to put the silicone on and sleep with it. I am terrified it is going to come off and be a choking hazard. But the braces are shredding his mouth and the silicone stops this!

Any advice please?

Before placing the silicone, make sure you dry off the piece of braces you are sticking it on. I never had it fall out but even if it does, he is unlikely to choke on it. Your gag reflex works when you sleep and it's only small bits of silicone. I have fallen asleep with chewy in my mouth before and it was still there when I woke up. His mouth will get use to the braces and the ulcers less pretty soon.

If you want wax you can usually pick it up at the supermarket or chemist. Rinsing with warm salty water helps with the ulcers too.

Thank you ubermum, that is what I needed to hear. I am feeling pretty miserable at the moment, putting him through all of this. His whole mouth is swollen, lips etc. He only has a very narrow jaw and mouth, so getting the braces on was quite difficult. His mouth looks stretched and baggy. I am a bit horrified, but hoping that is normal after having that mouth opening device that they use! I had no idea braces were like this, it is unusual for me to be so uninformed.

I had braces as a teenager and trust me it does get better. If he's just had them put on it will take a few weeks before the mouth gets use to them... and then after that you can't feel them at all.

I had braces almost 6 years.

Wax. Get the wax.

Warm salty water as mentioned.

I used to take nurofen to help me sleep. Helped the inflammation too.

It is always worst after getting them on/tightened, so don't worry, mouths heal quickly and in a couple of days he will feel better.

That's good to hear. I was going to suggest wax as well, i was given some when i had braces 20 odd years ago and worked really well.

I used the wax, slept with it on braces too. Like pp said dry the spot before applying.

I was bad with ulcers and found that sedagel lotion worked really well on them.

Help! Ds managed to get through a whole container of silicon. Tell me the pharmacy sells it??? It isn't wax, it is a product called Orthosil. Am hoping to get the same, but would be happy enough to get something else in the meantime!!
