Ours is kaput - ducted, evaporative

We moved into this house (build 1967) about 4 months ago. Air con went last week.

A tech has just been through and said our was a hodge-podge system with parts from here there and everywhere. And the ducts are on their last legs.

He reckons system and ducting about 20-30 years old.

So, the quote...

$3600 for a new system

$1200 for new ducting (currently have 4 ducts/vents)

$750 for an extra duct (on/in a flat roofed extension)

Good prices? Should we shop around a bit?

Sounds about right. We were quoted $3500 for the new system, but using existing ducting. 6 ducts, no zones.

DH is looking at getting some more quotes tomorrow. Ball is in his court, I don't actually mind hot weather!

Agree sounds like good pricing. We just had split system installed - aircon was bought sepesrately for $2060 and then installed for $1100.00 Most dutcing prices I researched were higher than what you have been quoted.

May still be wise to get at least one more quote - and how much do you know about the company that has already quoted? Are they reliable, been around awhile, etc?

Do you know what brand and model they quoted for? That makes a huge difference!

We recently had a Braemar installed, we kept the existing 5 ducts (no zones) and it was $2420.

Another place quoted $4100 to replace everything completely, but they said if we kept the existing ducts it would only save us $250 :s (no need to point out why we didn't go with them!)

The third place quoted $2960 for the unit and $1040 to replace the 5 ducts.

I'm in Adelaide. FWIW the cheapest guy was a small family business, the most expensive one was a chain store...

We had a new refrigerated aircon system with all new ducts, 12 points, including two new ones for $5500 18 months ago. I would get a few quotes and compare. We got 8 quotes - no kidding. The one we went with was not only the cheapest, but the only one who came and measured the house to determine how much they needed to quote for. The others all said, oh it would be about $xxxx. I decided not to chance them coming up with additional charges later, so chose the most thorough quote.

Thats an amazing price! We toyed with the idea but the problem with going for refrigerated means all the old ducts and vents would need to be removed and the vents plastered up and new ones cut which would be a PITA and add to the cost.
