Basically we are looking at moving master and ensuite to the front of the house and where the lounge/dining currently is and having our living areas where our master/ensuite are now.

Apart from removing a few walls the main cost would be the bathroom in an entirely new location. It would share a common wall with the kitchen. My big question is can the bathroom be done under $10k, we'd really only need the plumbing put in place and waterproofing and DH is handy enough to put in fittings and do tiling.

Cost can depend upon what you need to purchase, ie tiles, bath, vanity, shower, glass/mirror, sink, taps, paint etc.

We may have spent $10,000-$15,000 on our bathroom, it is hard to know as some of it was done by a builder (full renovation) and other work done by our own tradespeople. It was originally a lean to at the back of the house. We saved money by going to outlets and auctions for tiles and fittings etc. Our bathroom looks quite luxurious considering the cost; it is very large and spacious.

I don't think you can on $10k!

For us, we are keeping the bathroom in the same spot and everything will be gutted, the floor ripped up and new drainage pipes put down (old 60's house and the water pipes aren't being changed) with all new furnishings and we are getting quotes around the 12k - 18k mark.

It depends on what level of finish you want. If you just want basic fittings, then you probably could do it for that price if you do some of the work yourself.

BTW, waterproofing is not a difficult job... I did both our bathrooms for under $500 and our tiler said it was the best waterproofing he has seen. There are lots of instructional videos on the web. You just need to check the BCA regulations to make sure you do it correctly.

We did our minute bathroom - left in the same spot, plumbing in the same spot, all the work bar the plumber ourselves and we stopped counting at $8000...(but we kept spending).... AND it took us over 3 months to do!

Get a few written quotes from bathroom installers and go from there.

I think the cost and time involved in moving walls will be a bit more than you are anticipating. The bathroom alone I'd say yeah doable in under 10k, we've done one in less than that and are currently working on another two. We've also done a lot of wall moving and that is where it can be pricey. Things such as whether they are load bearing need to be taken into consideration, then there is the cost of the new wall being built (pretty quick and not too bad) any floor repairs that may need to take place. Moving a bathroom to a new location will require a lot of that floor to be ripped up to lay plumbing (we are going through this at the moment with our ensuite lol), plus there is the cost of an electrician to move your wiring and things, then there is the cost of plastering / sanding. Waterproofing itself is fairly easy. Then there are your things such as paint etc, which isn't much but still a few hundred and the costs add up.

If you weren't moving actual rooms around I'd say yep too easy, but not with actual rooms having to move.

We did ours for around $8k. We didn't move plumbing to an entirely new location (we did move it around though) and it was a fairly small bathroom. But it was including a new window and its fitting), and a new door.

We used a builder who was happy for me to hunt down bargains for PC items and use his trade account to purchase them - the items I picked were higher end, and the bathroom did look very sleek and exxy when finished.

So in my experience it can be done, and you dont have to have the budget look. So if you are willing to put in some work hunting down bargains and tiling I think you might be able to do it at a squeeze.

We are looking at doing most of the stuff ourselves over time and pay to pay, it was just the laying pipes for bathroom in new location and the removal of 3 internal walls and moving a power point or too that we need to hire out for.

Dh can install toilets, basin, shower, lay tiles etc bit by bit as the budget allows.

Just a thought as PP mentioned a new window. the new bathroom doesn't currently have a window so I'm guessing it's probably a requirement to have one? It would have an external so is definatly possible

You may need to check with your council or planning department about the window. Don't forget to install a fan!
