I recently had my 12 week scan and it shows that my baby has abnormally thick fluid behind its neck, which can be a marker for anything from down syndrome to heart defects.. My heart has never sunk more than it has this week.
Im getting the results paired up with the blood tests tomorrow, so i dont know anything for certain. Has anyone had this result at the 12 weeks ultrasound and still had a healthy baby or did the results ring true? I have a perfectly healthy 18 m/o girl, so this is a shock to my system. I'd really appreciate your experiences! |

Sorry you are going through this. It's such a hard time and so stressful.
With this pregnancy - after two healthy kids we got a bad result due to the blood tests. The scan was ok. We were devastated but decided to do an amino which was all clear at around 16 weeks. You do have a choice of a few tests to find out for sure. It's worth finding out all the options to consider. We Were also shocked when it happened but we had already agreed before having kids how we would handle such a situation so we just went ahead with the tests. I hope all turns out well. |

I think whatever the results show tomorrow, we will go ahead and do the CVS or amnio depending on our doctors advice. We too, had already talked about what we would do if we were in a situation like this, its definitely a lot harder when its all so real. Thanks for your help.

Hi Livvia,
I had the same with my first child, his nuchal was 6.5mm and he had fluid around his tummy. We were pretty much told that it is unlikely that everything was fine. Based on the nuchal only we had a 1 in 5 chance of DS but this halved after the blood tests. We were also informed of heart defects, skeletal issues and other syndromes. We opted to do a CVS on the spot and paid for the FISH results, which took 24 hours, and they found nothing wrong with the babies chromosomes. We then had many follow up scans to check the heart, and skeletal development - they never found anything. Today I have a perfect, very normal 3 year old and they were never able to explain why he had so much fluid. So dont stress, just wait and see what happens. In no way does it suggest there is definitely something wrong. It is just one of many indicators and it is not an exact science. |

It really can depend, I have had a very thick measurement and the further tests showed there was a very serious defect... my GF had a measurement around 4mm but clear bloods and then a second scan showed a much lower measurements, she is about to have her baby....
best advice is to get all the results , speak to the genetic counsellor and the specialist OB about further testing to find out, in these situations knowledge really is power and helps you and your partner know and consider risks, options etc good luck and hugs, its such a diffcult time... |
