So if you've broken a bone in your foot (or anywhere I suppose) and it wasn't diagnosed straight away how much pain were you in. Did it get progressively worse?

I was lifting up our kitchen bin this morning and the handle broke on it and the main part of the (full to capacity, overflowing) bin hit my foot, probably from about mid-thigh height. I reckon it probably weighed 30 or so kg. It really hurt a the time, the pain subsided, and although it's hurt a bit to walk on today it has mainly been Ok. It is now starting to swell and is hurting, well, rather a lot. I can put up with it, but I am staring to wonder if maybe I've fractured a small bone. It kind of caught my foot right on the edge of the bottom of the bin, so only one specific part of my foot took the impact IYKWIM.

Guess if it swells more and hurts more I'll be off to the GP tomorrow, but of course, I'm curious of others' experiences with minor fractures. You can see an indented mark on my foot where the edge of the bin hit it, but it hasn't really bruised much, which I have been surprised about.

I broke the 5th metatarsal (no idea how you spell that) in my foot.

It freakin killed! Total agony. I did it playing netball at night, went home and went to bed with ice on it just thinking I had twisted something. By the morning it was black and blue and I couldn't put any weight on the foot at all. Not even a limp, I had to hop. Off I hopped to work (my Dh gave me a lift on a scooter!). My boss took one look at it, called me a cab and sent me to the ER where it was diagnosed as broken. I was in a lot of pain and it was incredibly swollen.

Anyway hope yours is okay but go and get an xray. I doubt you could put weight on it of it was broken.

Foot injuries can be incredibly painful and crippling without a bone being broken.

I once had what was eventually diagnosed as a bad sprain. I couldn't properly weight bear on that foot for more than a month! It was so tender and so slow to recover I was convinced something was broken, as was my physio who saw me go grey every time she pressed it..... so xrays were done twice and nope, definitely no break. It's never been quite the same since, either.

I hope for your sake there's nothing broken OP, but that doesn't necessarily mean you don't have a few ouchy weeks ahead of you!

I had a fracture in my foot that took a while to be diagnosed.

I seriously contemplated trying to cut my foot off. DH could not sleep in the same bed as me because just having the sheet move caused so much pain I was sobbing.

So in short, it really, really hurts.

Thanks. Maybe it's just soft tissue then, hope so.

I walked on a broken bone for 2wks and in that time walked 10km every few days, before it was found to be broken. My foot hurt a tiny little bit, but not much.

I've fractured a bone on the outside of my foot. It swelled up and ached badly for a day or two, then gradually lessened over a couple of weeks.
There was no treatment, it was just a matter of waiting for it to heal. My GP recommended crutches, but I found them too annoying and just hobbled carefully. Your case sounds quite similar to mine so it could indeed be a break.

I had a few small fractures in my foot bone after "saving" DS - he tried to pull a heavy screen on top of him and I stuck my leg out so it wouldn't hit him - my foot took the whole weight of this falling screen (it weighs about 20-30kg).

Didn't know it was fractures for a few months - maybe 2 before I got a scan? It hurt like hell but only when I "stepped" on it a certain way. Couldn't wear heels at all - lived in flats - but I assumed I had sprained/internally bruised it because I could still walk (or hobble on some days).

Didn't have any bruising (I don't bruise easily). No dents or anything else amiss e.g. wonky looking toes.

I broke a bone in my left foot three years ago. I couldn't get up and needed an ambulance as I obviously also couldn't drive a manual car.

It hurt. Really hurt. Really, really hurt. It still hurts some days now.

I broke my navicular bone. As I fell down a flight of stairs, I thought I had sprained BOTH my ankles (yes I hurt both my feet). After 2 days of sitting on the lounge with frozen peas and other various frozen things, and taking Nurofen and not sleeping, I went to the doctor.

As I could wriggle my toes, I didn't think I had broken anything (you know, cause I once watched a medical show which made me an expert on all things medical). To my utter disgust, I had broken my right navicular bone and tore all the ligaments in the left foot. Strangely enough, it was the left foot which hurt more than the break. Also, because I was walking around (to go to the toilet and to get more frozen things and Nurofen) despite being very tender, I still didn't think I had any broken bones.

I ended spending about 12 weeks in a cast - it took AGES to heal.

Good luck OP, hope your foot is okay, but it probably wouldn't hurt to get it checked out to be sure.
