I'm going to make a bag for my Uke.

Have been googling and can't find a pattern so I think I'll just draw around the instrument and make one up.

As it needs to be a protector and not just a bag I thought I'd quilt it a bit?

Now - experienced people... set me right.

Do I just make a sandwich of cotton/wadding/cotton and sew them all together and THEN cut out? Or do I cut out first?

Does the shape of the sewn together bits make any difference to how protective it would be? Was thinking I'd try and sew around some patterns on the print instead of just squares..

AAnd how hard is it to attach a zip to quilted things? Should I abandon that and just go velcro instead?

I feel sorry that no one has come to help you with your Ukulele bag. I have no idea either how to make one, but I googled out of interest and found some nice pictures of sewn padded guitar cases if you want some more inspiration.

Must've been something bad going on with my googling tonight. I didn't find anything near as good as you. So thanks for that Sweet Cookies. Even though I'm not the OP, I'm quite pleased with the links you posted! My son will love to make himself a guitar bag.

I would trace around the Uke onto paper and then add 7cm all the way around: 2cm for a seam and some extra space because the shape will shrink a bit when you quilt it.

Cut two of these from your top fabric, bottom fabric and wadding (you will have 6 Ukulele shaped pieces of stuff in all).

Then cut strips as wide as the Uke plus 2cm on each side for seams (eg; if the Uke is 6cm wide, the strip should be 10cm) and as long as the circumference of the Ukulele shaped piece - you may need to sew a few pieces together.

For ease of sewing, I would quilt the front and back pieces as you like, but just sandwich the wadding for the strips without quilting.

After you have quilted the main pieces, check them against the size of the Ukulele and trim if need be (but don't forget to leave the seam allowance!).

Stitch the front and back to the sides, leaving an opening as required to get the instrument in and out again.

A zip will be the nicest finish, but you could also just finish the edges nicely and sew some ribbon on either side for a tie-close. I wouldn't choose velcro myself - always seems easy but hard to make look neat.
