Hi all,

Interested in hearing thoughts on the name Alfred, with nickname Alfie

DH quite likes it (it is a family name on his side), and while I adore the nickname Alfie (love the Shirley Hughes books), Alfred just seems a bit much to me....

Siblings are Lydia Catherine and William Stewart

Other possibilities (classic type names):

Miles
Henry (not sure with a William already)
James
Julian (probably no longer a real contender)

Middle names (not keen on these as first names as they are the names of family members who are still alive):

Alexander (preferred) or Joseph or Patrick

Help me please oh wise EBers!!!!

Henry - I think Henry Alexander would be nice
James Alexander/Patrick- would be my 2nd choice

I think Alfie is cute for a baby and little boy not so much for a teenager and Middle aged man.
I really don't like Alfred.

Out of the names you listed I think I would go with;
Miles Patrick or
James Alexander
actually Patrick goes well with both original.gif original.gif

Alfred does not appeal to me at all and neither does Alfie, either as a nn or a stand alone name.
I don't think I would do Henry with William, although its not as obvious as William and Harry (yes, I know Prince Harry's name is actually Henry)
I vote for James with Alexander or Patrick as mn.
Lydia, William and James makes good sibset.

I love Miles. I love Henry, but agree probably not best with William.

I like Al fine, not sure about Alfred. Definitely wouldn't use Alfie alone. My sister recently was in my ear making an impassioned case for Alfred (it is a family name for us too) and I was more than happy to let her dibs it. Same woman threw herself into battle defending the honour of the name George, fwiw.

For me Alfie doesn't translate to an adults name. Don't like Alfred at all.
Not a fan of Miles either. Sorry.

James Alexander or James Patrick sound nice with your other kids names.

Alfie doesnt work beyond early childhood imo. Alfred makes me think of alf from home and away. Usually with tv show characters ppl say no onr will remember them when the child is school age but stone thr flaming crows alf has been there since the beginning abd he'll be there til the end!
From ur list I like miles

To me Alfred/Alfie are names that just do not work any more (like Cecil and Victor). My vote would be for James Patrick.

I am a big fan of Alfred with NN Alf. Fred is a good NN too.

Alfred is also perfect with the sibset IMO and I don't think any of the other options are.

You could use any of those MNs with Alfred.
