So I am just about to put in an offer on my first house biggrin.gif With the real estate agent and wanted to know what others thought.

Is it a absolute necessary thing to hire a conveyancer for settlement?

Two questions for you:

Do you know what searches you need to do and how to do them in order to protect yourself as the buyer?

Do you know what documentation to prepare and how to attend settlement?

If you can't answer these two questions, then yes, you need a conveyancer. biggrin.gif

I don't know what state you are in, but we recently used Conveyancing Works here in QLD and they were excellent and cheap.

Headed for TTC#2 5 years later..
It's less trouble to hire a conveyancer original.gif

We used Piper Aldermann recently and do not recommend them original.gif

Good luck with your offer and new home!

Yes. They deal with all the legal crap and they chase the bank and the agent for all the paperwork. Worth every cent.

My dh did our conveyancing, there is an online program much like etax set up that you have to follow. You dont miss any of the steps and the checks you have to do are all linked and set up for you.

However, you will end up taking a day off and going into the city to the large legal building where most of the settlements are finalised.

As a conveyancer, I have dealt with people on the opposite side to me who "act" for themselves and it becomes a messy nightmare.

To engage a conveyancer, especially for the first time saves a great deal of stress for the money.

Plus, if you are trying to save costs because it is your first home by not engaging a conveyancer i would look else where to cut the cost, because if you cannot afford a conveyancer and your budget is that tight, perhaps you need to re-evalute how much you are actually looking to spend.
