hi
i have just rec mail from centrelink and i owe appr $7k from the last 2 yrs overpmt.

I dont understand how overpmt can be made. when i thought that they paid you once they got mine and DHs tx details. we did get a large pmt in dec once our taxes were all done, but how can they overpay you when they work it on that.. it says i have to pay by mid feb. i havent got that sort of money.. i am so stressed. they have sent me 2011-2011 debt and then 2011-2012 debt. i have been on hold now for about 30mins, obviously many have got these letters today with centrelink. any one out there who can explain why i may have had a debt.. mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif mellow.gif

if it really does end up you owe them money, they either take some amount out of your payment each fortnight or last year i was late putting my tax in, they cut off my family payment and I had to organise to bpay an amount each f/n that i could afford. I did $100/fn until I got my act together and put my tax in.

Wow, I would feel so very stressed as well. It would be worth ringing the ATO as it would be as a result of your income. Do you do your own tax forms? Is it possible that you could have overlooked something? Say if you or your DH get a car allowance for work, or if you received a lump sum payout from work which wasn't included. Or even investments that weren't included.

The only thing I can think of is that centrelink didn't have the two of you linked, so they made the payments based on your taxable income & not yours + your DH's taxable income.

I'd certainly be giving them a call to find out what went haywire.

I think you need to tell Centrelink if your income details have changed.

They do an adjustment for the year once you lodge your tax returns, but they don't change what is being paid to you unless you advise them of your new circumstances.

We have been underpaid the last couple of years as the original figures I gave to them were based on me working full-time and now I only work part-time. We get a nice bonus once our tax is done (almost $4000 last year) but they keep paying us fortnightly at the lower rate as I haven't changed my details with them.

You need to advise them of your current income details so that they don't keep overpaying you.

Same scenario here two years ago.. Did all claims at the end of financial year after tax return had been completed. Got a big amount given which made no sense. Then got a huge debt. Rang and queried the debt as it was more than what they had paid me... Then got reissued a smaller debt which I paid back...
Ring up and query the debt if it does not seem right.

They do repay it, if you don't owe it. I got a acc payable in December which they deducted $2600. When they realised I didn't owe it, I got every cent back.
