I have a near new home with wall mounted mixer taps. I am looking into setting up a fdc and need to find a way to make these child proof. In the bathroom in question there are two, one on the wall above bath, one at the enrance to the shower.

The FDC coordinators I've been liaising with have not been able to suggest anything other than removing the taps, not really practical given that I still need to bath/shower my own kids! And I've googled for ages today with no luck. But surely some device exists, which can child proof such a fitting?

The taps look a lot like this...

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I don't have anything earth shatteringly brilliant to add, but my immediate thought is "What sort of hot water system do you have?" We have an Infinity style system where you can preset the temperature or turn it off altogether. If you have one of these, or something similar, then would that eradicate the issue, which I'm presuming is the children being able to turn the tap on and burn themselves?

Like I said, I'm sure it's not that simple though....

I have this problem too. We have a temperature control set at the mains, but I would like to stop them turning the taps on too. We're teaching them not to do it, but it only takes one accident.

I saw these - tap caps - but don't think they're big enough.

Thanks for asking.

I called Kidsafe House in Qld and they said they're not aware of anyone that makes a mixer cover. They are trying to get one made.

They suggest cutting the end off a soft drink bottle, cutting a whole in the middle and then putting it over the tap. They suggest this to those that don't want to spend the money on tap covers for traditional taps. Not sure if it will work for a mixer, but worth a try.

Would love to see other's ideas.

Cheers

Try a 2l juice bottle. Cut a cross in the larger label side it and push it over the tap. Kids can't turn on the tap, adults can remove the bottle, with a tug. It is not elegant, but it works.

I'm not in denial, simply selective about the reality I acce
For FDC purposes, could you not satisfy their requirements with a lock on the outside of the bathroom door?

What a pain, especially if there is nothing available via Kidsafe or otherwise.

Ok this might look a bit hokey, but I think it would work:
- screw a pad eye to the wall behind the mixer handle, close to the mixer base. Pad eyes look like this:

- padlock (or cable tie) the mixer handle to the pad eye. If it's tight enough, it would be impossible to turn on the tap at all without removing the lock.
You could use a padlock with a combination so you don't have to worry about losing/finding keys.

ETA Of course, you would have to be very careful wrt drilling into walls near plumbing. Might need a plumber to do it.
