Hi all,
My DH has lost a lot of weight recently (yay for him!) and still has a lot to go - but we are worried about his skin! So far it doesn't look like he has too much excess but it looks like the skin on his upper arms might be getting a bit loose, if you know what I mean. As far as I know there isn't really anything that helps other than time of surgery. So I just wanted to get some feedback. Is there anyone here who lost a lot of weight and had excess skin? Did it go eventually? How long did it take and do you think your age had anything to do with it? Did you loose weight slowly? He is loosing on average 1-1.5 kg a week (diet and exercise) - it might be too much for his skin to catch up? My DH is under 30, so we are optimistic that his skin is still elastic enough to shrink up again. I am just worried about how long it will take! Thanks in advance. |

Congrats on his weight loss. That's a very decent loss per week and probably a bit fast for his skin to catch up. Depending on his starting weight will depend on whether the skin with shrink or he will have "tuckshop arms".
Is he toning his arms whilst losing the weight as that may also help. I work in weight loss surgery and some of our patients need to haver surgery to correct this effect but as I said it depends on how heavy he was to start with and how much weight he wants to lose. He definitely should not do surgery until he has well and truly stablised his weight and had no significant regain. Arms are tricky and need to be done by a very capable experienced plastic surgeon. |

Thanks for that. He is going to the gym and doing weights and rowing - I don't know if that is the 'right' kind of toning?
He started off 130+ kg, has lost 30 kg so far and needs to lose about 20 more. We really don't want him to get surgery. |

You might be pleasantly surprised. I lost 50kgs in 10 months and I had a slight sag at the bottom of my stomach, but it wasn't too bad, certainly not enough that I would have considered surgery. I have put a bit back on (hopefully will rectify that this year), but my doctor did say it can take a year or more for the skin to catch up with the weight loss.
