Has anyone else had this or can explain to me why?


I've been placed in midwife care and haven't seen a doctor in 2 months. At my last appointment at the anntenatal clinic (at the hospital) I asked for a letter to confirm my pregnancy and due date so I can put in my maternity leave. No doctors were available at the time so the midwife advised me to see my GP (because I needed the letter before my next scheduled anntenatal appointment).


After waiting 1 and half hours to see the doctor, the GP has refused to provide a letter and told me to go back to the anntenatal clinic, because a doctor there had to do it.

That sounds really odd. Did you ask the doctor why they wouldn't write the letter? Had the doctor seen you related to your pregnancy previously?

I did and she said it wasn't for her to write anntental letters, only doctors certificates. ???? But she couldn't explain the difference. When I argued with her she said "I understand but I'm still not writing a letter for you, go back to the hospital"

I hadn't seen this gp before (the gp I usually see is on annual leave until the end of February). But she had all of the information from my usual Gp in front of her plus my pregnancy health record from the hospital.

I would assume the Dr wouldn't write the letter as he hasn't confirmed your pregnancy.

I would just call the midwives/hospital explain your situtation and ask for confirmation letter be sent to you.

I'm guessing that too.

Some Drs are sticklers for following the rules and some are more 'slap dash'.

I left a GP appointment in tears after the GP on duty wouldn't write me a backdated referral to my IVF clinic. She was not allowed to back date referrals. Even if it was simply renewing an existing one.

Neither the IVF clinic nor I had realised my referral had run out - this mistake was going to cost me thousands and thousands of dollars, and force me to cancel a cycle.

I got home rang my normal GP's office in tears - had a phone call from her receptionist within the 1/2 hour to come and collect the copy of the referral she had waiting at the desk - they had already faxed it to my FS.

God bless her and her lax approach to rules!

I just don't see the difference between a GP who hasn't see me during this pregnancy and a doctor at the hospital who hasn't seen me during this pregnancy, providing a letter to confirm I'm pregnant. It's not like I visited a new clinic, they have all of my information, test results, the works.

I'm just super frustrated more than anything because I'm going to have to book another appointment, another 2.5 hours out of my day to sit with the doctor for 15 mins.

Poor you! Thumbs down for the GP, of course she could have written you a letter, if she has access to all your files and the usual GP is unavailable, that seems completely silly. I would ring and speak to the practice manager and explain the situation, I am sure they could get another GP to write the letter, as all it really is is formality.

I was given a 'due date' letter at my first antenatal appointment, without asking for it.

How strange! Why wouldnt the antenatal clinic do it? They happily write mine for my maternity leave application for work, and are also giving me one saying im fit for work past 34 weeks so work let me work til 38.

Could it be that normally letters for maternity leave need to specify an estimated due date? Mine certainly did.

While the Dr could confirm you are pregnant, further investigations could have been needed to provide a due date?
