Hi, Ds will be turning 6 next month, he is really keen on motorbikes, we have recently been to a shop for something else and he's seen a small two wheeler (50cc)that he loves. We live on a rural property, so he would have plenty of space to ride around, perhaps too much space? I'd have to limit the areas he was allowed to ride. To me 6 seems very young to have a motorbike, so i'm still a little unsure? Does anyone else with a 6 y.o own a motorbike and is it ok for them?

My son who is 7 in June got his first bike last week. I like peewee 50's as the parts are easy to replace and they last forever. My son has to wear his helmet, armour, gloves and goggles or he doesn't get on. Even thought he has a bleeding disorder I still had no hesitations in getting him his bike.Safety gear is a must!

DS will get one as soon as he can (around 4/5) DH and I grew up on property's and riding and still go out with the DS on the quad with us. I think if you encourage boundaries and safety you will be right. You can also buy moto training wheels if you feel you want a bit more security until he gets use to it.

Please don't. Kids that age have no impulse control and no understanding of consequences. It's a serious injury waiting to happen.

my boys are grown now, but had motocross bikes when they were 4 & 6 yrs. We did have a farm property at the time, but got them into local club days & bigger events as they got older. My DH had ridden motox when he was younger too. The safety gear is important to have - accidents do happen - & as they grow of course the gear/boots/helmets will need to be upgraded etc. Our kids have had loads of fun with their various bikes & at 22 & 25 yrs old now, they own their own bikes & race competitively in various spots here in NZ. Loads of good friends from the sport too.
its like any sport for our kids, if they are keen & you are able to support (financially & physically) them in their interests its all good.

I would consider it if I was sure I could provide suitable supervision.

yep, my 6yo does. He also has very mild CP.

He rides it really well, and isn't crazy at all. He loves being able to be like everyone else, where his disability goes unnoticed!

Our kids have every full protective gear though, not just a helmet! Not a cheap exercise when you have three that ride!
