Hi,

I have a 1920's murder mystery 40th birthday to go to and need an 20's inspired dress. I know I can just get a flapper costume, but was looking for something I could possible(?) wear again. I am plus sized, 173cm wear anything from a size 18-22 depending on brand/style. Not the ideal 20's figue I know.

I have found the following. Thoughts?

http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/Samya+Dip+d...default,pd.html

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/evans-beaded-s...ss-plus/3418545

http://www.killercurves.com.au/Retro-Glam-...Red-Lining.html

(not sure if last one really fits the era.)

Any thoughts, suggestions greatly appreciated!!

I like the second one (can't get #3 to load)

Try and get your hands on a cigarette holder, some seamed stockings and DEFINITELY wear some long gloves.

As an aside my grandmother who was a young woman in the 1920s did untold damage to her delicate breast tissue from bandaging her very large breasts flat to her body to try and look fashionable!
By the time I met her they were down past her knees....

I like the middle one the best and as the other pp's have said - long cigarette holder, feather boa, seamed stockings and a band around your head and long beads. You could watch the movie "Thoroughly Modern Millie"if you can find it before the party.

I think large breasts will be down past your knees, regardless of what you do to them. sad.gif

I love the thrid one, and it could be made to work using the right accessories. To get around seamed stockings, you can wear a normal pair, and draw a line down the back of your legs using mascara (as was common during both wars). Also get a cigarette holder, and all white cigarettes (they didn't have filters back then, so no yellow ends). Note, you don't actually have to light the cigarette. Feathered facinators are your friend.

The third one isn't from the right era.

I'd go with the first one. The one I prefer is actually the link that a PP posted. It is more in tune with the Flapper era.

Any colour would ok for a 1920's party. There were a lot of jewel colours but from memory lots of pastels as well (I'm going by what my grandmother told me).

The third one really doesn't fit the era, but the second one is lovely! (I think I want it.)

I second the cigarette holder; see if you can get a headband that goes across your forehead, holding your hair down, not up, and ropes of long pearls. You can also do a bit with makeup: try and eyebrow-mascara your brows into straight lines if you can, and wear dark red lipstick in a Cupid's Bow. Oh, and shoes could be buckled Mary Janes with a low heel. And if your hair's long you can wrap it into a little roll at the nape of your neck and it will still kind of look cropped (women who didn't want to or weren't allowed to do the chop in the 20s often did this).

I'm a bit of a fan of the 20s.
