The names Beryl and Merle. If this baby is a girl I would like to name her after both my Nan's but quite frankly their names don't work well in 2013

I have no idea of modern versions, but could you use them as middle names perhaps?

What fresh hell is this?
I'd use them both as middle names. I know there has been a trend towards vintage/grandma names, but those two are a little too out there for my taste original.gif

Warning - occasional attempts at humour - not always successful
I am sorry, but if I wanted to honour my grandparents I would either use them or put them as middle names rather than find a modernised version. Personally I love and would use both - my money is on them resurging in popularity in the next few years. Only 10 years ago Ruby and Olive would never have been contemplated.

I agree with the bolded part, strongly disagree with the rest. I still wouldn't contemplate Ruby or Olive!

I can't remember which member, but ages ago some suggested instead of using their name asking them to pick a middle name, so that you are still honoring them, but don't actually need to use those names. I thought this was an interesting idea that might be of use in your situation.

I'm another who would choose whatever first name I wanted and then have them both as middle name.

I've met many Ruby's who are not old people and not around 10 or younger so I would not place it in that category.

Beryl is a stone that's often green. You could go with 'Jade' as a similar idea?
