Hi everyone,

I was chatting to a friend yesterday as im due bub next week. She was asking my if i was going to try breastfeed again and then the topic of formula and the recent shortage (i didnt really know anything about it) and now im wondering what brand of formula we are in shortage of?

Last time i fed DD for 4 weeks fully breastfed, then until 6weeks comp feeding, then fully bottle feeding, i used the nanha gold.

Just curious as if i want to formula feed, i dont want to get new bub onto a formula that is in shortage.

cheers.

My local chemist had signs up limiting customers to buying two tins each of Karicare formula due to a shortage. I wonder why there is a shortage?

There were a few stories in the papers starting a few weeks ago claiming there was a formula shortage due to people buying in bulk (as in 50-100 tins) and sending them back to China. The first few stories said they were sending them to their families but then later stories claimed it was a black market thing. So, not sure on the specifics.

So in a nutshell it is mainly Karicare aptamil gold in shortage because Chinese parents are buying in bulk and taking or sending it over to china, as they are not happy buying their formulas. Too many bad things have happened with the formula companies over there.

there is also a "goats milk" formula as well.. cant remember the name of it

woolies in the paper said that they would have a limit - yet an asian lasy - with no kid in tow, bought 3 boes the other day and no one batted an eye lid (and i think they have increased the price tooo)

coles has signs saying there is a limit of 4 per customer.. dont know if its enforced, or if it can be through the self serve counters....

Thanks for the quick replies.

Its good that the stores would state that there is a shortage, atleast if i need to buy something to feed bub i can try choose something that i can buy all the time.

I know that there was issues with nanha gold last year, so i may stay away from that one.

Funny though because i was looking at the karicare aptimal, might have to rethink for my plan B original.gif

spotty.

The baby formula in China are bad.

The problem is, China impose very high tax (>70%) on foreign imported baby formula. So the seller do not buy from manufacturers directly, and relies on Chinese in Australia to buy baby formula in bulk from stores and ships back to China.

That is, smuggling.

Canada, US, UK, and even South America face the same problem.

We are a group of parents in Hong Kong, these smugglers seized most baby formula in stores and we need your help. We created a petition in US, hoping that Obama will step in to stop the madness across the globe. Please sign the petition!

Definitely not policed. I bought 6 tins the other day because I'm sick of running around trying to find stock when DS runs out, and no one said anything at the check out. FWIW I didn't have my DS with me either, I rarely take him shopping.

The formula in question is Karicare Aptamil Gold.
