DD has ezcema since around 3/4 months, which is on her face (lower cheeks) and back of her knees. The face really gets angry looking, very red and she is constantly scratching it. We have a new cream her GP has put her on "Advantan" which is working wonders but I have been told I can't use it constantly, it's just to take the readness away which it is doing and then switch onto "Hyrdozole". I have been told it's very much an age thing, that she will outgrow it but when you see her scratching it breaks your heart.

Has anyone else had any luck with various things and controlling it? I am hopeful the current plan will improve it to stop her scratching but keen to also do anything else I can.

It is just heartbreaking. My LO has ezcema on his face too and we were put onto Elidel which works very well for him. It isn't a corticosteroid and we have been told to use it until the ezcema clears up.

The face is the worst I think, because there is no way to prevent the scratching. Using the Elidel though, and chopping his fingernails every two or three days means that we can get about 90% cleared up and he's much happier. OUr GP did have to get clearance to prescribe Elidel though, so maybe just raise the possibility of that with your GP.

Have you asked for a referral to a specialist? We saw a dermatologist when DS was 3 months as he had very bad infected eczema on his face and also quite a bit on his back and back of knees etc.

She said we should use Sigmacort ointment, sparingly, together with an antibiotic ointment which she prescribed. The Sigmacort is available over the counter. It is a very low dose steroid.

She also said to create a barrier we should use a soft paraffin like Dermeze to keep the skin moist and to relieve itching so he would not rub his eyes.
We slathered on the Dermeze morning and night and it really helped. He did largely grow out of it but when it comes back we use the steroid the first day and then the Dermeze and it clears up fast.

If you are in Melbourne am happy to PM you the name of the dermatologist we saw. She was fabulous. She said that low dose steroids are fine in short bursts whereas the GP told me no way. I figured the dermatologist was the expert!

I recommend Carolines Cream and Carolines All purpose wash.

Ok here goes again..
Our DD#4 suffers badly from eczema has since she was 3 months old... It gets that bad we have to do wet compressions on it and bandage them up so she can't get to it at night... We have ben using Advantan since sh as little it is the only thing that clears it up when it gets bad..
Our newest DD had skin issu when she was 3 months and i went to m local Pharmacy here and the girk highly recommended a product called Kenkay. Within 2 days my DD skin was clear of everything.. I thought it was magic I couldn't believe it..

I swear by this stuff I dont use anything but this on my girls and myself. I also have other family members who have psoriasis who also use Kenkay nd it is a relief.. I use all the skin care products and it works on my girls. It isn't harsh on the skin it is supersoft... Love it.
Hope this helps nothing worse than seeing your LO in pain and irratated by this condition..

i meant to add that keeping it well moist is the key.. Our Dr says as soon as it dries out thats when the urge to itch somes into play.. Hence why we use it regulary during the day..

My dd hasn't had it as bad as yours but we used sigmacort then QV cream which has been brilliant. We also use the QV bath/shower stuff.

DS had the same. It was exacerbated by all the dribble.

As well as the steroid ointment, I would put Lansinoh on his face after every feed to act as a moisture barrier. Then, I would put the steroid ointment on last thing before bedtime at night. I would put the steroid on just enough to get it back from red and crusty, but I think it's worth doing a shorter course of more powerful stuff than a longer course of weaker creams.

I also made sure never to use soap - but I'm sure you're on that already. It was all about trying to keep the skin as intact as possible.

My bub hasn't had an eczema flare up for a while. He has a prescription cream for bad flare ups and I use this for a week. For milder times I use a cream that the chemist reccomended, I can't recall the name right not but there are plenty of different ones around and from reading these forums different creams work for different bubs I've read that Moo Goo is good though.

Bus with eczema need to be washed in a mild bath wash, we use Dermaveen but there are other similar products, just ask the assistant at the chemist. Be sure at the bath water isn't too warm, make it a it cooler than usual as this can affect it too. We used moisturiser on him too but haven't had to for a while. I also found that rice cereal brought out his eczema too.

Google information on ezcema too because that is wher I read about rice cereal and when I tested removing it from bub's diet it made a huge difference.

Thank you so much for the replies, it's a horrible skin condition for little ones. I will try anything to try and fix it for her, every time I see her scratch I just feel terrible.

Baby5hope - thank you, I also found the advantan fantastic but concerned it isn't a total fix everyday, only to get it under control. I will try the kenkay and hope she has the same reaction to it.

Sakura - thanks, yes next step I agreed with Dr is a specialist if we can't get it under good control. I'm in Sydney unfortunately, but I have a good GP so I'm sure she will have a good one to recommend.
