My DD is 13.5 months and started daycare two days a week when she was 11 months. Since then she has had a temp at least every 2 weeks, a cough that has lasted the whole time, gastro, hand, foot and mouth and brochiolitis. The poor thing is really suffering and I hate to see her so miserable. Everyone keeps telling me that babies get sick a lot whe they start daycare but this seems extreme to me. What do you think? Have you lived to see the other side of the endless daycare viruses?

They say the 1st year is the hardest, but that the little ones bounce back as the are quite resilient. It builds up their immune system.
You will see light at the end of the tunnel so don't despair ;-) Edited to add, yes - it does seem to even out and plateau off! This post has been edited by LemonPie: 14/01/2013, 09:19 PM |

Agree with PP. It took approx a year for my son to stop getting constant colds, coughs, tummy bugs, etc. And he was in Family Day Care, so was only exposed to a small group of kids!
He just turned four and is in a daycare centre 3 days per week and rarely sick (touch wood). It does get better OP - its just a tough first year. Hope your little one feels better soon. |

Its normal. As their bodies get used to it the periods of illness will get further and further apart. At the age of 10 my eldest daughter doesn't catch everything going around anymore whereas my youngest daughter 6 catches anything and everything and passes it on to her younger brother aged 2.

It was tough but I had to work so we roughed it out. Hang in there |

Yes, it is quite normal. My eldest started day care aged 8 months and was constantly sick with all the illnesses you've described. She is aged 2.5 now and rarely gets sick. The first year was the hardest.
Hang in there - things will get better. |

Both my girls had day care 1 day a week when they were younger. We could almost set a timer to them getting sick after day care.
I don't really have any advice, it's just part of it. |

DD's first winter in daycare was terrible, she spent more time off sick than she did in care.
Since then she's barely had a day off. The odd thing here and there but nothing like that first year. |

Agree with PP's. My son would be sick EVERY SINGLE WEEK (he only went 1 day!) and would recover just in time to go back and start the cycle again. He has now been in care for a year, and he is rarely sick now and when he is, it is nowhere near as severe nor does it last as long. Sprouting the mummy mantra- This to shall pass.

Yep DS started childcare at 11 months and went 2 days and was sick every 2nd week. He had numerous colds, a cough that never went away and a viral rash. He is now 22 months and doesn't seem to get sick much anymore.
There is a light at the end iof the tunnel. My DD starts childcare next month so I'm about to get the same thing all over again 😞 |
