Hopefully I can get some wonderful advice.
I have been toilet training my son since he was 3 years and 2 months which was 4 months ago. During the day he was for the first few months wearing his undies and going to the toilet for wee and holding in his poo until he got his night nappy back on which I have been told is very normal. He goes to daycare twice a week and they also said all good with wee but no poo and its common for the kids, especially boys for some reason to hold the poo for a while until they feel more comfortable doing it in the toilet. Well in the last month or so he has decided that he will do a little poo (sorry tmi..like a little skid) in his undies all day long! The other day I had to change his underpants 14 times... I am trying to be patient but losing my cool with him a bit. It is so frustrating. I think I would actually prefer if he just did a massive accident poo in his undies and got it over with. His bum is now red raw from all of the little tiny poos in his undies all day long. I have been popping him on the toilet but he is refusing to go.. Other than popping him back in pull ups, does anyone have any ideas? Thanks so much. |

It sounds like he might be constipated. I think when they get too blocked up sometimes little bits can escape as you describe. If you think this may be the case I would look at his diet and fluid intake to see if you can relieve the constipation. I am giving my DS coloxyl drops as he is holding his poos and won't do them in toilet or nappy, which was making him very constipated and making toilet training even harder.

Thanks stardust. Yes I did think that might be the case. He is very active and drinks a lot of water throughout the day and will eat fruit occasionally but I'm sure I could try and get more into him. Do you have any idea on trigger foods that could be causing the constipation?

It's called sneaky poos and happens when children hold onto the poo and cause constipation. It then becomes liquid behind that, which leaks out around it.
Google that term and you will find lots of info for assisting your son progress through his toilet training. I would hope that your childcare centre would also have advice on the topic and ideas on how to proceed. You might also want to contact your local child health nurse for an appointment and support. All the best, hope he gets past this stage quickly |

I have tried to cut back on banana, dairy and white bread, pasta etc and stick mainly to whole grains instead in my DS. I also have tried giving him pear juice as this helps as well. Good luck, hopefullyif y can get the constipation under control he might be more willing to poo on the toilet in time (as it won't hurt).
