Just curious as to how long others whose children have had the same operation kept up the round the clock Panadol/Nurofen regime. When did you start skipping doses?

My daughter recently had the operation, she is 3. We weren't allowed to give neurofen as it can promote bleeding. I would check that out as it was something the doc made a big deal about.
We gave panadol every 4 hours during the day and the stronger meds from the hospital each night. The panadol was needed for about 7 days every 4 hours and the night stuff about 5 nights once a night.
It was all up around 9 days before nothing was needed.
With the meds she did really well and it wasn't as bad as I expected. She only started to cry etc when the meds wore off.

DS2 had the surgery about 18 months ago and the thing that sticks in my mind is the increase in pain level a few days post surgery. He picked up really quickly after it, then slid down around day 4-5 from memory (which I think, from memory, is quite common). We tapered it off after that point.

I've heard lots of people (and read lots on the internet) about refraining from using Nurofen, however our surgeon tells all her patients to use it, so we're just going on what she says, albeit a little hesitantly.

We are at day 5 and I've just skipped the 3pm Nurofen dose as she seems to be doing OK today. Am waiting for this awful day that everyone talks about and am hoping it was yesterday as she was pretty flat then.

My daughter had hers done almost exactally a year ago, she was 5 at the time. My advice would be to keep on top of the pain relief. Day 7-10 were hard for us as that was when the scabs started falling off. Truly day 7 was the absolute worst, crying, couldnt eat, face swollen. She was so bad i called the surgeon and they explained that this is the worst time and that it was all normal.
Since your daughter is coming up to that time just keep an eye on how shes going with it. We alternated panadol and codiene linctus per the surgeons instructions.
Keeping on top of the pain relief i believe helped but use your best judgement.
Not trying to worry you, just surprised me as DD was doing so well then all of a sudden went downhill and i was not prepared for it at all.

My 3 year old's pain peak was about day 4/5. We did Panadol during the day and painstop at bedtime and once at midnight. I think it was about day 5 that he slept through and then after that I dropped back to Panadol every six hours during the day (3 doses) for another 4/5 days.
The only thing about dropping the afternoon one is whether she'll be able to eat - I found giving the pain relief about half an hour before food really helped DS get something down.

Never had it here either. DS was 5.5. But he was on Endone/panadol. I eased off endone quickly (was only having 1 dose a day, *if* needed) - And wound up panadol after day 8 or 9.

Pain stop is the best one after a tonsillectomy, that's what dd was on

We are now day 14 for DS who is 3.

Days 7,8 & 9 were the worst (he did throw up scabs on day 7 which could have made it much worse than others - grossest thing I have seen!)

I was finding he started to decline the morning doses first, still needing the 3pm and then the night time doses the most (on oxycodone).

I was getting concerned about the amount of medication that he was on and even sought the advice of a friend who is a nurse. By day 11 he was medication free.

So from our experience, that pain was good days 3 -7 bad for three days than much better almost overnight.

My son had a tonsillectomy just before he turned 6.

I used Painstop, and kept it round the clock for the first 7 days. Around day 8 I skipped a dose as he was asleep and I didn't want to wake him - he came out of bed in terrible pain, he was shaking and crying, and unconsolable. It took around 20 minutes for me to get him to take the Painstop (the worst 20 minutes of my life).

After that I kept the Painstop up to him round the clock for another 7 days, after which he came off it over a 24 hour period (so I probably could have weaned him earlier, but couldn't bring myself to do it after the previous incident)!

I was also told not to use Nurofen after surgery.
