I have been thinking about this since the thread the other day. (yes ,sad, I know
Just for fun, I thought we could compile a list of all names which fail the Scrabble test. In order to qualify as a failed Scrabble name, the name needs to be a real word that could be used in a game of English Scrabble or sound exactly the same as a real word but be spelt differently. Will only count full names, not ones generally used as nn's only - so rules out Bob, Rob, Jim, Sue etc In order to simplify the list, some categories of names only need to be shown by category, not every name in that category. All Flower names: Lily, Rose, etc All plant names, including trees and herbs: Ebony, Jarrah, Sage, Rosemary etc All general nature names not covered in above: Glen, Dale, Lee, Brooke etc All gemstone names: Ruby, Jade, Pearl etc All occupation names: Mason, Cooper, Miller etc All virtue names: Faith, Grace, Joy etc All 'Intangible quality' names: Justice, Liberty, Destiny etc All musical names: Cadence, Melody etc All animal and bird names: Fox, Wolf, Robin, Martin etc All weather names: Storm, Misty, Breeze, Zephyr etc (actually I dont know if Zephyr is often used as a name, am just getting carried away with thought of using it on triple word score and then all other individual names: Mark, Paul, Eve, Ever, Gage, Peter, Sally, Paige, Carol, Marina, Grant, Sean, Dawn, Neil, Chase, Wade Any more? |

Was it your child or did your Dh say your next child had to be named after the next name you heard? I think if you use the scrabble test as your namimg standard you miss out on a lot of great names, most of which wouldn't even be considered unusual? |

No - my grandfather used to call the brown snakes Mulga's when i was growing up. As a result evertime i hear that name i instantly think of the snakes. He hated them because not only did they kill the chickens, they would also eat any eggs, plus one bite would kill a working dog. |
