DS is 2 y 8 mo old.

For about the last 6 months I have been trying to engage him in wanting to TT.

No pressure, just encouraging lots of watching mummy go for pees and poos, lots of encouragement to tell me if he has done a poo or a wee, occasional goes of sitting on the potty or loo and trying for a pee, lots of talking about how when he is a big boy he can wear big boy undies and do poos and pees on the potty or the toilet.

I often ask him if he wants to do poos and pees on the potty or the toilet and over the last couple of months he has progressed from outright refusal saying NO!!! To saying, "not ready yet" to saying "one day" to most recently saying "OK!"

He almost always tells me now when he has done a poo too.

This morning he came running in to me and told me he wanted to do poos on the potty, so I got the potty out and sat him on it. He didn't do a poo, but did a small pee.

I put him in undies and set the timer for a half hours time, about 5 mins before the timer went off he did another small pee on the carpet and told me about it. I cleaned it up with no fuss, and just reminded him to tell me if he needs to do a pee and we can do it on the potty.
Half an hour later, we manage another small pee on the potty (I was feeling pretty good at this stage)
Then after that he did a poo in his undies. Again a clean up and a very kind and gentle reminder.
Put him back on the potty half an hour later and nothing. I let him sit for 5 mins while I read to him and then took him off. 5 mins later massive pee on the floor. Again cleaned with no fuss, just reminded him to use the potty. Tried again in half an hour, nothing, so kept asking him every couple of minutes did he need a pee, after I asked him the third time, I was in a separate room and he peed all over the floor again. Another gentle reminder and clean up, plus timer reset, but 5 mins before the timer went off, he did another small pee on the floor. It's nap time now so he went straight back into a nappy for that.

Do you think he is not ready psychologically or physically yet?

Do I persist (given the readiness signs) or do I leave it a couple of weeks then try again?

Hi OP - I think all of that sounds really positive. My DS was the same age when I started TT, and for the first few days there was wee and poo everywhere - I think they need to have the accidents to work out what is going on. After that he started to do a little wee dance when he needed to go, so I started to be able to get him onto the potty before he did it. A few days later he started telling me when he needed to go, and we haven't looked back from there.

It requires a lot of patience at the start, and lots of cleaning!! But I think you've made a great start, and your DS sounds ready to me :-)

Dont stop now. From what I hear it can happen within a few says of starting. The fact that you have had some success on the potty is great!

We are trying with DD 2 and a half. It can be hours between wees, and she drinks heaps, and I still cant get the timing right to get a wee on the potty. She will be happy to sit for half an hour and colour in while on the potty but doesnt wee until she is standing back on the carpet. Aghh

Sounds like you've had a good start, but don't stress if it doesn't work this time. It took until the 3rd time before DD TT. And she had hardly any accidents on the 3rd go. TT within about 3-4 days just after Christmas just gone. She still has the odd accident but boy am I glad we didn't push it early on.
