So this is still my favourite although I can't get DH to agree at the moment.
I mentioned it to a friend today and she said she wouldn't choose it because of the expression 'a Jonah' or someone who brings bad luck, which I had never heard of. Googled and found on wikepedia:

"A long-established expression among sailors uses the term "a Jonah" as meaning a person (either a sailor or a passenger) whose presence on board brings bad luck and endangers the ship.[17] Later on, this meaning was extended to "a Jonah" referring to "a person who carries a jinx, one who will bring bad luck to any enterprise..."

Of course I know the biblical story about the whale, but didn't know there was an expression associated with it. Now I am annoyed because that's not a meaning you really want associated with your kid. Have you heard of this expression, do you use it yourself, would it turn you off the name?
What do you think of the name?

My instant thought is of the Jonas brothers for some reason laughing2.gif and then I think of Jonah Hill in Knocked Up..

It's not my style of name but if u love a name I'd use it regardless of the associations. Except maybe Hilter or something like that! wink.gif

I suppose the most important thing is if you and your DH love the name.

Nope, I've never heard of that expression.

I love the name - it was my favourite for a boy during both my pregnancies. DH wasn't entirely convinced, although both were discovered to be girls during scans so we never really got very far with the discussion.

I say go for it!

If a cat doesn't like you, then what's wrong with you?

It's my favourite for a hypothetical future second son at the moment, and none of that bothers me at all. In fact, I have an Adam, and "Adam's apple" and "since Adam was a pup" and "up and Adam"(haha) and "I don't know him from Adam" didn't bother me either.

Jonah is a pretty cool biblical character and the story has roots/relationships with many other old stories about sea Gods.
Big thumbs up from me.

I've never heard it either but makes no difference to me. I'm a Jonah fan and it's in currency so I would expect this name to be a plain-sailer.

Jonas is great too.

I love it, I'm in love with Jonah. I wish DH would let me call this baby Jonah but he said no to both the last baby and this one being called Jonah. It's too similar to his name Johnas (pronounced like jonas brothers) and growing up he got picked on for his name.

If DH would let me I would use it in a heartbeat original.gif

I love it and the bible story of Jonah and the Whale (where I can only presume the 'bad luck' myth stems from?) wouldn't stop me at all.

I love the name, wouldn't hesitate to use it.

I've never heard of that meaning, so probably others haven't either.

I think of Jonah Lomu when I hear it. biggrin.gif Also that cute little boy in Sleepless in Seattle.
