I have just found out that I have 2 hernias.

Just wondering if anyone else cares to share their experience with hernia surgery.

not sure what type of hernia surgury you have but i had umbilical hernia surgery ib july last year.

That firt night it hurt like all (insert lots of f rods) i remember trying to get up to go to the loo and i couldnt move legs around sad.gif (i have a good pain tolerance i had a c section with ds and neck surgery a year before the csection)

but after that night i wqs sore but it wasnt too bad - hardest part was not lifting my son but i times it so he was either at day care or at MIL s as she was on holidays. .

My DH had the groin hernia (not sure exact name) and he was about the same with not being able to lift stuff he said hurt like hell at first but then got ok after 2-3 days.

Just make sure you have support esp if you have children its very important not to be lifting afterwards for 2-3 weeks

I had epi gastric surgery (kind of under the breast bone) and had mash sewn over it via keyhole.
I won't lie, the after surgery recovery was really painful. I couldn't do much, it was actually more painful than my ceasar. It took longer for me to recover as well. The experience left me never wanting to have another surgery ever. Sorry, it probably isn't what you wanted to hear but I didn't want to lie. Maybe different types have different recoveries?

Thanks for your replies. My Dr has told me there's one behind the belly button and I also have a small one to the left of my abdomen, almost as though they're in a line from each other.

I have had 2 c/s so I guess the pain thing doesn't really bother me. Am pretty sure they go in through the naval for the surgery and then push the mass back through were it came from and stitch it up. Sounds simple, but I'm obviously not expecting it to be a breeze and I'd just prefer to get it done and over with as opposed to doing nothing when there could be potential for something more to come of it later down the track.

How did you work out you had a hernia ? Did it hurt or did something just stick out? Could you push it back into place and then it would come out again?

I could feel mine, it was like a big lump just under my breast bone, freaked out when I found it so was kind of glad it was only a hernia. I couldn't push mine back in as it wouldn't move very much.

As the person before my post mentioned, I can feel the one on the left side, feels a lot bigger than what it actually is. Can't really feel the one behind the belly button though.

I mentioned it to my Dr when I was there for something else as I'd noticed it about 3 weeks prior, not in any pain or discomfort.

Thanks. Not sure whether to ignore or deal. Heart says ignore, head says deal.

I have an umbilical hernia just above my belly button. I have decided to ignore! My dr told me the stitches don't always hold for that long and it happens again.
I've found that when I am not overweightish it doesn't bother me at all. If I am a bit heavier and I over eat it can hurt.
When I was pregnant last it stuck out awfully and looked terrible but the minute she was born, it wasn't noticeable again.
While its not causing me pain I'm prepared to let it go. I just don't have time to be out of action just now even though my mother is around alot and could help I would prefer my daughter to be a bit more independent before I consider it. But then if its not bothering me anymore I will probably leave it.
