Anyone else had it?

I had a filling taken out today and replaced as it was old and he said leaking and decaying behind the filling. Apparenlty it was fairly deep.

He put in amalgum, but also put ? a something cover to protect the nerve as I was worried about ho/cold conductivity as I have had it before with another filling.

Anyway, felt nothing during the procedure. But about 2 hours later the pain started (I guess once the needles wore off). Ive had two panadol rapid and they took the edge off but then four hours later its awful again.

My whole jaw aches badly, tooth and gum/bone. Im not yet in "ong I want to die" pain, but its VERY sore and Im not going to be able to sleep with this pain (have just taken two more panadol before bed).

its the kind of pain that will probably wake me during the night as it aches incrediably bad.

So is this normal after a deep filling? Will it perhaps go by tomorrow or has he hit a nerve or something? Is there anything I can do?

Nurofen might work better then panadol if you can take it.

I had a deep filling and gave it time to settle down but it never did so I had to have it taken out. I think they can either do that or a root canal depending on which tooth it is.


Oh and if you have any Vanilla extract try some if that on the tooth to help the pain

The only time that happened to me there was actually an abscess there that the dentist had overlooked.

Hope it's not that but I would be ringing the dentist anyway.

Ill be living on panadol and neurofen if it doesnt settle! lol

Panadol hasnt kicked in yet and OMG feels like someone has takne a chizel and hammer to my mouth now. I swear its getting worse by the minute.

Sure Im a woosy when it comes to mouth pain, but this is awful.

I had a very deep filling done in August. The dentist put in something to protect the nerve just as you described. I didn't have pain in it like you describe afterwards but was told that it will be highly sensitive for about 8 weeks afterwards. The sensitivity has not settled down - sensitivity to hot & cold, cant eat on that side, so I'm going in this week to start a root canal. Yay, not looking forward to it. If I were you, I would call the dentist in the morning and ask them whether you should expect this. Sometimes because they got close to the nerve it might take some time to settle, but I'd ring and ask what is 'normal' in case you need to be seen again.

Yep i have had that... i swear it was worse than the tooth ache, its all to do with the pressure changes in the tooth, and all the other work done... take panadol/nurofen and it does settle down after a few days, if not go back to see your dentist... he might have missed some of the root...

Your nerve may be dying, and the new filling could have aggregated it.

My dentist said to me that nerves either die rapidly and violently, or slowly and quitely

Either way, hopefully your dentist will be open tomorrow and you can call first thing.

Do you have a heat pack you could use tonight?

I thought the nerves were left in tact as it was just a filling, not a root canal or anything, just a standard filling. Only took him about 20 mins to do.

Yes he wouldnt have touched the nerve but it might be close. Hopefully it's just irritated the nerve and it settles down. I'd try nurofen plus when you can get some and ring a dentist first thing tomorrow if still in pain

Do you have any vanilla extract in the cupbord? If you rub some on your tooth and gum it might help
the pain.
