Ok. After another fraught and emotional Christmas in 2012, DH and I have decided that we want to go away for Christmas 2013.
So, please hit me with ideas. Preferably not USA/Canada or Australia based. Would prefer to hear from those that have or do spend Chrissy away from your extended family. What do you do on Christmas Day,how do you deal with ,presents etc? Our only Christmas away was with my parents back in Canada when the kids were little.DS was on,y 3 and he's 8 now. Presents were a nightmare as my parents went overboard. Kids will be 13 and 9. Neither believe in Santa. |

I like the ideas of a cruise too!
As to presents, we went away this Christmas and we had all the presents jammed into our suitcase, while all the clothes were in the other, kids', suitcase. You need to think about this when shopping for presents, make sure you buy small things! |

We go camping on the south coast for Christmas. The caravan park is always full so there are many people that also 'escape' their families at Christmas.
We decorate the tent with tinsel and Christmas lights. We have a traditional Christmas dinner as that was how DH was brought up. I would prefer cold meats and salads on Christmas day (as th is how I was brought up) but DH has somehow go his way with this one. Maybe this year I'll talk him into having a cold lunch for Christmas Day (I can live in hope). The first year we went away we took all the presents with us. Big mistake as they took up too much room. Now we open most before we leave and take a couple each for the children to open on Christmas Day. We forgot to take a couple for Christmas Day in 2011 and it didn't feel like Christmas Day as here were no presents to unwrap. I'll never make that mistake again. If you don't want to stay in Australia what about Bali or Europe. I'd love to spend a Christmas in Lapland one year. Another Christmas I'd love to spend in the UK with my British relatives. http://lapland.nordicvisitor.com/travel-de...-claus-village/ This site may give you ideas on what you want to do for Christmas this year. If you don't mind having a winter Christmas, head to Germany and visit the Christmas markets - just magical.

We've rented a house in Fiji for Christmas 2013. We've all agreed no pressies for adults. Just small stuff for kids (ranging in age from 14-1). No decorating, no cooking, no cleaning up. We have housemaids to do that for us. Can't wait!

I second Germany. Go before Christmas as it's the lead up that's so special. Christmas markets, mulled wine, outdoor ice skating... It's a bit hard to find anything to do on the day itself though.
If you don't mind staying in Australia, I've heard they do Christmas well at the column palmer resort. Santa comes, there's a great lunch and activities if you're up for it. |
