Hi all I'm after some advice regarding haltis and gentle leaders.
I've got 2 freight trains in the shape of a 45 kilo bullarab and a 20 kilo staffy that have become almost impossible to walk and because they love people they try to run up to them dragging with them and frightening people. The BA is 3 and the staffy is 1 and both have been pulls since we got them but they have gotten far worse and encourage each other to pull so I've had to take to walking them separately and not at all with the pram as I can't control them while pushing it. I love taking em out but the stress and physical fight to keep them from pulling is getting to me and being pregnant it wears me out. I'm wondering of a halti or gentle leader might work on them and wondering which everyone prefers and why and after any tips to help curb this behaviour before we upset someone on our walks I've trained lots of dogs over the years being an ex-exhibitor but these 2 have me stumped TIA |

My current dogs are all good on the lead but I had one in the past who pulled like a steam train on walks. Funny boy he was, because I used to trial him in obedience and he knew exactly what the word "heel" meant, but he didn't think it applied to leisure activities!
I tried a few of the head halters and found most of them to be effective, but the one I liked the best was the Sporn halter. It's a slightly different design to the others in that its a collar with a padded nose piece that runs around the collar threaded through loops. I liked it because it was the most comfortable on the dog and if he got the idea not to pull, I could easily slip the nose piece down so he'd just wear it as a collar. Start pulling, and I slipped it straight back on. It also has the lead attachment at the back of the neck rather than the front. This post has been edited by FiveAus: 11/01/2013, 10:25 AM |
