Hi all,
Been a long time since I've been on EB so is nice to be back! DH & I are expecting number 2 now so back to the planning  This time around we are going to start with cloth nappies and a while ago I bought bamboo prefolds. I have a couple of covers but was wondering a couple of things:. - Do you really need to use a cover, i.e. does a newborn stay in the nappy long enough to soak through? - Has anyone tried using their OSFM cover without the inserts like a plicher? Has that worked okay? - Did you find it easy changing newborns using prefolds? Was it more work/ awkward? Just trying to plan what I would need at the start as bubs will go into our old MCNs at about 3-6 months. At the moment I have two wool covers and a BH small. Any opinions would be much appreciated! |

I have four children. For my last newborns I used prefolds (angel fold?) with Thirsties covers. No cover if no bottoms over nappy, but I was ok with changing 20-30 nappies a day. We lived in a warm environment and this worked for us. Good Luck.

I always use a cover. But DS didn't really poo that much. An empty pocket osfm would probably work, but it might be a bit bulky
|

I didn't find covers any problem at all - it saved on lots of washing and caught a lot of the runny bf poo that invariably will escape from a prefold. My favourite covers were Lollipops!

My newborns could wet through a prefold (Mandy Mac or econobum in 2 hours easily. Plus the covers I used had no absorbency whatsoever, so using them together was a must for us.

Thanks everyone!
I had wondered whether necessary and it has been a while since I had a newborn. I forgot how much they poo and wee. Thanks for the input and if anyone else has any other recommendations I'll check them out. Off to look at Thirsties and Lollipops! |

You can add extra absorbency to prefolds by running a booster (insert) up the centre of the prefold before folding which may take away the need for a cover especially on a hot day. If you need a cover wool absorbs as well as waterproofs as well as breathes so not hot and is low care
