A close friend has just got engaged, I would like to buy a nice gift perhaps up to $200. What was your favourite gift received?

I reckon expensive Sheridan sheets. Hasn't broken, no warranty hassles and used regularly.

Worst gift = an iron for an engagement gift. We didn't use it until we got married 1 year later. used it for 2 weeks, then dropped in on a concrete floor and it stopped working. Warranty was invalid as it was more than a year old, and not the current model in the shops anyway.

Unless couple have been living with parents until wedding I get a goodgifts.org type gift - goats, drinking water, sewing machines that kind of thing.... but I am funny that way - I refuse to upgrade peoples lives just cause they are saying I do.

Cash.

We didnt ask for it or have a registry. It was just a cultural thing from some of our guests.

Because we had already lived together, we didnt 'need' stuff and i prefer to choose my own decorative house items.

We did appreciate the Sheridan towel set and the Le Cruset pot set. Those were about the only non cash gifts that we have used on a regular basis.

When buying gifts, I generally go for a Riedel decanter and glass set if I know they like red wine.
