Hi,
DS1 (who is 5.5) really wants to see The Hobbit film. He watched a 'making of The Hobbit show' and really wants to see the film. He's watched the trailers and wasn't scared at all. He's pretty mature, has a very good understanding of what is real v pretend and knows that The Hobbit is all just a story, but I'm worried that there would be lots of scary fighting (even though he says he wouldn't be scared of it). He's seen lots of films at the cinema, but all PG and G. What do you think? Should I take him? Or get it on DVD for him to watch in a couple of years Thanks |

I have heard it has some pretty scary creatures. I will not take my DD6 after she had nightmares from Ghostbusters (DH has be reprimanded!).

Can he sit quietly for almost 3 hours? I think that would be enough to make me wait for the DVD.

It's really brutal and the monsters are hideous. It's rated M for a reason. |

I personally wouldn't take a 5 year old.
My DS is 10 and wants to go see it but I am not sure. He doesn't watch any movies aimed at adults except star wars (he hasn't seen revenge of the Sith though which is M). DS as read all the books and loved them. Sorry to derail, but would you let a DS 10 see it if they had read the book? |

um no! It's rated M for a reason. He's 5.5, he should be watching PG and G rated movies and waiting till he's older for anything heavier. Add to that his concentration span and ability to comprehend the storyline won't be mature enough for him to handle it.

I saw it on Tuesday. I promise it is definitely not suited to 5 year olds. There are some scary creatures, lots and lots of fighting scenes which go on for ages, plus some gruesome slayings (heads being chopped off). A big no way!

He has definitely earned the trip I think, I only got halfway through The Hobbit .. OP - No, imo 5.5 is too young. Watch it first yourself on dvd, when it comes out, then decide. |

I certainly wouldn't ! Peter Jackson has always had a tendre for splatter gore - LOTR has some glorious moments with orcs getting smashed & I suspect that The Hobbit would be more of the same. Personally, I can't wait, but there's NO WAY I would take a 5 YO !!

No way on earth. It's pretty violent and is super long, even I had trouble sitting through it.
It's M for a reason. |
