Evening!
Just after some ideas on how I can help DD with her wind at night. DD is a really good baby but at night she will fuss when i put her down after a feed (exclusively BF). I can pick her up and she'll burp within 30 seconds but she still seems unsettled even after burping her for 5 or so minutes. She doesn't get particularly windy during the day and is a good sleeper so I am puzzled as to why this seems to be a problem at night. Any suggestions? Could it be a build up of wind from the day? How can I help her over come it so we all can get some sleep? TIA |

I'm suspecting your baby is new, perhaps under 2-3 weeks.
If so then this is normal newborn behaviour, the pattern for a term baby tends to be easy to settle to sleep after day feeds and less likely to settle and sleep around 11-12 pm/mn to abotu 4-5 am, then baby has a nice long sleep around dawn and a quiet morning. If this is what your baby is doing this is not a sign of a problem you need to fix. It is certainly tiring and if you don't know a baby will do this it can be an unpleasant discovery because you are so tired and you just want your baby to sleep. But she wont. You need to try and rest in the day to prepare for the night and help each other at night, bfing and soothing the best you can. After around 2-3 weeks of age they tend to move the unsettled period to the evenings. The link below has research based information on infant crying, I hope it helps. It will pass. All the best. http://www.rch.org.au/kidsinfo/fact_sheets...settled_babies/ |

Thanks lucky! Yep she's 3 wks old but was born 3 wks early. I still think she's a bit windy though as just now she's been doing a lot of farting.
I've been resting during the day bit it's easier said than done when you have a 6yo & 3yo as well! |

Hi, yes I bet you are exhausted. If she is prem then she probably has been behaving in a more feed and sleep manner but now she has reached term (due date) she has probably changed and is now behaving like a newborn, it can be a shock when you have been used to the sleepy baby and all of a sudden the normal unsettledness kicks in.
It sounds like your feeding is going well though, when bfing is going well babies are often the most settled they can be but still they usually have these periods of crying, squirming, farting etc. I hope you can get as much support as you can so you can focus on the needs of your new baby and your rest. All the best. eta, you're welcome porkchop's mamma |

I've only just started to feel it in the last two days but managed an hours sleep this morning. My poor girls have had a pile of snacks and activities set up for them then left them to their own devices for a little while :s.
So how long should I expect this stage to go for? I had a terrible time with DD#2 so I am determined not to get into to bad habits with DD#3 (eg feeding & rocking to sleep). |

Take another look at the link above, it talks about what to expect etc, how long. The night unsettledness could be for about 2-3 weeks then evening unsettledness. Peaking at around 2 months but can continue past this.
If you click the link to purplecrying which is at the bottom of the linked page, it has even more information on behavioural norms and suggestions to help understand and cope with crying, soothing and sleeping. Is there anyone who can come and help out with your older 2? |

Thanks lucky! We don't have any family in town to help out and the friends I trust with the kids work full time so I'll just have to make the most of the weekends and times DH is home.
I think today's just a bad day and tomorrow I will be in a better frame of mind. |
