Day trip to melb CBD, With a 4 and 6 yo

We are visiting a relative in hospital tomorrow in Melbourne - st Vincent's. I want to make a day of it with the kids. Any suggestions of where to take them, or where to avoid. We will be on public transport and we have recently been to the aquarium. TIA

We love the zoo - has a train station right outside. Reasonable entry fees. Food not amazing, but certainly edible. Their animals have beautiful habitats, and they have heaps of elephants! Also, Collingwood Children's Farm - nice hands on activity, but not Enough to spend the whole day. Science works museum is cool too, but not sure about public transport out there...

You could walk to the museum from St Vincents. Entry is cheap and you could spend most of the day there.

St Vincent's is very close to the museum. Walking distance. And then you could jump on the tram and head into the state library to check out what's on or head in for yum cha and shopping.

Make sure you have a maki card if using public transport (we like making it difficult for others to visit us)

The Museum is near St Vincents so may be an easy visit. The Zoo can be fairly pricey so worth doing if you go for several hours... am assuming you don't have the membership. On the plus side, the Keeper Kids free interactive activities should entertain them even if it's rainy. If either of them like art or drawing and if you're near Flinders St Station, I recommend crossing the bridge and going to the NGV (National Gallery of Victoria). There's a totally free kids area on the ground floor with constantly refilled paper and colouring pencil supplies as well as some other light, sculpture, art exhibits aimed at young kids. Could be an entertaining free hour or so if the weather isn't great, and is easily accessible by public transport. PS. Myer has a parents room and kids/parents toilet room near the kids dept. Melbourne Central also has a totally revamped and really nice parents room.. more for younger kids and feeding but I think there may be some decent kids toilets there too.
