I've just enrolled with Open Universities and I'm starting to look at the textbooks I'll need. Just wondering if anyone knows a good place to get textbooks at a decent price? I can get them easily through the Unibooks site but they're obviously quite pricey.

Thanks biggrin.gif

Hi

Exciting times, eh?
Secondhand texts - I've had great experiences using this website. Used it about 10 times and no problems at all. Save usually around 80-100.00

If Ic an't get my text there I go to Book Depository UK

Prices have gone up a bit in the last 18 months, but usually save around 25%.

Also check fleabay and gumtree.

Good luck!

For all of DH's degree and the first year of mine I bought them from the Book Depository. All last year however they were cheaper at the uni book shop. huh.gif They year before they were around $70 each cheaper at The Book Depository.

I get mine through co-op bookshop. Generally speaking I have found them to be a bit cheaper or around the same price as that site that open university recommends - however with the co-op the postage is free.

I mostly get my textbooks delivered to my door two days at most after ordering - even for stuff that is listed as not being in stock. I find the quick delivery and good service is the best thing for me. I often leave ordering my textbooks to a ridculously late time - so I am very grateful for the quick service.

However I know that co-op bookshop is not the cheapest. I have seen textbooks sold quite cheaply through various online sites, including Fishpond, but I am reluctant to order from them when I don't know how long they will take. I have heard bad stories about Fishpond taking forever. So I'm just sticking with the good old co-op bookshop.

Also, most of the texts I need are published in Australia, which does limit choice somewhat (as most aren't available through overseas sites). But I would suspect if you are studying something that isn't so Australia-centric that your texts are most likely published overseas, and thus pretty readily available from many on-line stores.

If you want second hand, check out the university websites for notices. Students are always selling second hand texts.

I usually check the isbn for the book on booko.com.au then go from there. I've bought a lot from bookdepository and then some that are Aussie editions that aren't always available overseas I've gotten from the co-op.

You can check the publishers websites, some sell online as well.

I got an accounting text last semester from Booktopia. I looked everywhere, and it was the cheapest.

It's cold outside, there's no kind of atmosphere
I check booko.com.au for where is cheapest. Normally it is book depository. I've only had to buy one through the Uni as it was a Uni publication. Other than that I've been lucky and been able to get them pretty cheaply by checking booko.

Check out book world.com and I've used abe books before. Their price was less than half the price quoted by the uni book shops.
