Hi everyone. I am trying to get some news on the fire situation in NSW. My internet is playing up and I cannot get onto the ABC website. I have looked at the SMH website and am heartened to see that the front page is not half taken up with bushfire coverage as is usually the case when it is bad, but am still worried about friends and family in Sydney and Illawarra.

It is very frustrating being on the other side of the world and not having fingertip access to the news in situations like this.

There are a couple fires as far as I know. One really dreadful one near Cooma, which has jumped a river and is threatening a nearby town and one , which is a bit more under control nearby Bega.

I have to laugh at the "Sydney hits 40 degrees" headline on the SMH website. Certainly not the first time that its happened. I guess with the way Sydney's summers have been, it is astounding to even get over 35 degrees.

The headline just makes me eyeroll.

Adelaide hit 45 on Friday but of course the heatwave across Australia isn't real until Sydney registers it. #cynicalAustralianiscynical

No, though it appears to have connected to the site and is trying to load the page but so far it is just blank.

Yeah, Sydney has had some very wishy washy summers over the past few years! Though I didn't think that people were so concerned about the heat this time but because of a combination of conditions contributing to the fire danger. Has the fire risk been sensationalised then? Serious question, we are in a bit of a news void here.

howdo - To be honest, I can't even imagine 45 degree. I thought that only happened in places like Abu Dhabi!

Absolutely not sensationalised, it's very real.
