I was wondering whether there was anyone else out there that has been required to do the 2 hour (or 75gm) glucose testing and whether you were advised about the 3 day diet to do beforehand?
I turned up to the hospital to have this test this morning (with Toddler in tow!) and the lady said, "so you've followed the 3 day diet" and I said - no, I wasn't aware I needed to. My midwife gave me the paperwork at my last appointment but never mentioned anything about the need to stick to a specific diet.. just the need to fast prior to the tests. The nurse still did the testing - but mentioned it could be a complete waste of time if I didn't have enough carbohydrates in my system - I'm hoping the two hours spent there this morning wasn't a waste of time! Has anyone had similar experience? Thanks |

The newer guidelines say that there is no need to follow a diet, you just need to fast beforehand.

I did the GTT, and was only advised to follow the fast, not any specific diet.
BTW, I felt like a truck had run over me for the rest of the day, my poor body was working hard on that glucose, but results came back fine. Good luck with your test results. |

I didn't do the diet before mine, but the pathology place said I didn't need to, and that I just needed to fast from 9pm the day before. Usually the pathology place at the hospital will give instructions when you book the appointment for the 2 hour test.

I have done it 3 times, fasting only, no need for high carb diet ahead of time.
Reliable results, i had GD twice, but my post pregnancy GTT showed i no longer had diabetes. |

Another who only needed to fast. Good luck for it - while I didn't find the sugary drink too bad initially by the end of the two hours I was feeling very poorly. Hope all goes well

I did the GTT a couple of days ago - no fasting required.
Sorry to hijack but I have another question relating to the GTT - the lady taking the test started the first one hour timer after she'd taken the blood from the first test - not when I'd finished the drink which was probably about 10 minutes later. Is this the correct way to do it? I was under the impression that the clock was to be started at the end of the drink but I could be wrong. ETA - oops, meant to say I did fast from 9pm the night before but didn't do the special diet. This post has been edited by SunnyGirl79: 09/01/2013, 02:06 PM |

I've done the GTT 3 times in my life now and never have I had to do a special diet. No idea what the nurse was going on about... |
