I read this article and instantly thought of EB
A 15-year-old is suing the Icelandic state for the right to legally use the name given to her by her mother. The problem? Blaer, which means "light breeze" in Icelandic, is not on a list approved by the government. http://starcasm.net/archives/192052 http://news.yahoo.com/icelandic-girl-fight...-074758814.html Here's a way to solve uneequee names/spellings. Have a government committee to approve them! Unless a uniikee speller was on the committee - then all hell would break lose. Having to have names that follow Australian pronunciation could be a challenge too, since everyone has a different idea about exactly what that is. |

hard to comment without understanding the cultural context of naming in Iceland (which I do not)
I think the govt here has the right to refuse names if name is considered an obscene word or ridiculously long - I think that is enough, certainly in our Australian context. There are names and spellings of names which I do not like - but I certainly dont agree with a Big Brother draconian approach to it. |
